Abstract

The usefulness of content (target content), such as advertisements, may be increased by determining additional content and providing such additional content in association with the content. The target content may be text, a Web page, a URL, a search query, etc. The additional content might be related suggested queries (e.g. “Try a search for ______”), news articles (or excerpts or summaries thereof), reviews (or excerpts or summaries thereof), advertisements, user group messages, etc.

First claim

What is claimed is:

1. A computer-implemented method to display content items based on location data and additional content on user computing devices, comprising:
receiving, by one or more computing devices, a content item to be displayed on one or more electronic documents on user computing devices, wherein the content item is associated with a location;
receiving, by the one or more computing devices, a request to display content in conjunction with one of the electronic documents on a user computing device;
determining, by the one or more computing devices, a location of the user computing device;
determining, by the one or more computing devices, that the location associated with the content item corresponds to the location of the user computing device;
based on the determination that the location associated with the content item corresponds to the location of the user computing device, selecting, by the one or more computing devices, the content item to provide to the user computing device to display in conjunction with the electronic document;
generating, by the one or more computing devices, additional content based on information about an item from the content item;
inserting, by the one or more computing devices, the generated additional content into the content item; and
providing, by the one or more computing devices, the content item that includes the generated additional content in conjunction with the electronic document.

2. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the location of the user computing device is based on a latitude and longitude of the user computing device.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the configured location is based on an input of a provider of the content item.

4. The computer implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the configured location is input as a range defined by a configured range of latitude and longitude.

5. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the content item comprises a hyperlink provided in a display.

6. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic document is a website.

7. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the location is a geographic location.

8. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the location is based on a country in which the user computing device is located.

9. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the location is based on a region in which the user computing device is located.

10. The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the location is based on a state in which the user computing device is located.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the additional content is a text display.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the additional content includes a review of an item displayed in the content item.

13. A computer program product, comprising:
a non-transitory computer-readable storage device having computer-executable program instructions embodied thereon that when executed by one or more computing devices cause the computer to display content items on user computing devices, the computer-readable program instructions comprising:
computer-executable instructions to receive a content item to be displayed on one or more electronic documents on user computing devices, wherein the content item is associated with a location;
computer-executable instructions to receive, from the user computing device, a request to display content in conjunction with one of the electronic documents on the user computing device;
computer-executable instructions to receive, from the user computing device, information indicating a location of the user computing device;
computer-executable instructions to determine that the location of the user computing device corresponds to the location associated with the content item;
computer-executable instructions to select the content item to provide to the user computing device to display in conjunction with the electronic document
computer-executable instructions to generate additional content to present in conjunction with the content item, the additional content being generated based on information about an item from the content item; and
computer-executable instructions to provide the content item that includes the generated additional content to the user computing device to display in conjunction with the electronic document.

14. The computer program product of claim 13 , wherein the location of the user computing device is based on a latitude and longitude of the user computing device.

15. The computer program product of claim 13 , wherein the configured location is based on an input of a provider of the content item.

16. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the configured location is input as a range defined by a configured range of latitude and longitude.

17. The computer program product of claim 13 , wherein the content item comprises a hyperlink provided in a display.

18. A system to display content items on user computing devices, comprising:
a storage device; and
a processor communicatively coupled to the storage device, wherein the processor executes application code instructions that are stored in the storage device to cause the system to:
receive a content item to be displayed on one or more electronic documents on user computing devices, wherein the content item is associated with a location;
receive, from the user computing device, a request to display content m conjunction with one of the electronic documents on the user computing device;
receive, from the user computing device, information indicating a location of the user computing device;
determine that the location of the user computing device corresponds to the location associated with the content item;
select the content item to provide to the user computing device to display in conjunction with the electronic document;
generate additional content to present in conjunction with the content item, the additional content being generated based on information about an item from the content item;
insert the generated additional content into the content item; and
provide the content item that includes the generated additional content to the user computing device to display in conjunction with the electronic document.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the electronic document is a website.

20. The system of claim 18 , wherein the location is a geographic location.

21. The system of claim 18 , wherein the location is based on a country in which the user computing device is located.

22. The system of claim 18 , wherein the location is based on a region in which the user computing device is located.
