The invention claimed is: 1. A door handle assembly for a vehicle door of a vehicle, said door handle assembly configured to mount at a door handle region of the vehicle door, said door handle assembly comprising: a handle portion pivotally mounted at the door handle region of the vehicle door; wherein said handle portion is disposed at a pocket region of the door handle region; a pocket lighting module comprising at least one light emitting diode operable to emit light to illuminate the pocket region of the door handle region; wherein said pocket lighting module emits light of different colors responsive to respective triggers; and wherein said pocket lighting module (i) emits red light responsive to a door lock input to illuminate the pocket with red light, (ii) emits green light responsive to a door unlock input to illuminate the pocket with green light, and (iii) emits white light, responsive to receiving a signal from a remote device associated with the vehicle, to provide ground illumination of a ground region at a side of the vehicle at which said door handle assembly is mounted. 2. The door handle assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one light emitting diode comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes including at least (i) a red light-emitting light emitting diode that emits red light responsive to the door lock input, (ii) a green light-emitting light emitting diode that emits green light responsive to the door unlock input, and (iii) a white light-emitting light emitting diode that emits white light, responsive to receiving the signal from the remote device associated with the vehicle, to provide ground illumination of the ground region at the side of the vehicle. 3. The door handle assembly of claim 1 , wherein said pocket lighting module is operable to intermittently emit colored light in different patterns responsive to respective triggers. 4. The door handle assembly of claim 1 , wherein said pocket lighting module is disposed at an inner portion of said handle portion, and wherein a transparent or translucent cover element of said pocket lighting module comprises an inner surface of said inner portion of said handle portion, and wherein light emitted by said pocket lighting module illuminates the pocket region of the door handle region. 5. The door handle assembly of claim 4 , wherein said at least one light emitting diode comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes. 6. The door handle assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one light emitting diode of said pocket lighting module is disposed at an end portion of said handle portion, and wherein light emitted by said at least one light emitting diode passes along the handle portion of said door handle assembly. 7. The door handle assembly of claim 1 , wherein said pocket lighting module is disposed at the pocket region of the door handle region, and wherein light emitted by said pocket lighting module directly illuminates an inner portion of said handle portion that faces the pocket region of the door handle region. 8. The door handle assembly of claim 7 , wherein the inner portion of said handle portion facing the pocket region of the door handle region is formed to reflect light emitted by said pocket lighting module downward toward the ground region at the side of the vehicle. 9. The door handle assembly of claim 8 , wherein said inner portion of said handle portion comprises a reflective surface. 10. A ground illumination light module for a vehicle, said ground illumination light module comprising: at least one light emitting diode; a freeform optic disposed in front of said at least one light emitting diode; and wherein said ground illumination light module, when disposed at a side of a vehicle, and when said at least one light emitting diode is electrically powered so as to emit light through said freeform optic, illuminates a ground region at that side of the vehicle that spans the entire length of the vehicle and that includes a forward region forward of the vehicle and a rearward region rearward of the vehicle so as to illuminate at least the regions encompassed by a sideward viewing camera, a forward viewing camera and a rearward viewing camera of a surround view multi-camera system of the vehicle. 11. The ground illumination light module of claim 10 , wherein the ground region is illuminated with a luminance of at least 10 lux. 12. The ground illumination light module of claim 10 , wherein said ground illumination light module, when said at least one light emitting diode is electrically powered, uniformly illuminates the ground region at the side of the vehicle. 13. The ground illumination light module of claim 10 , wherein said ground illumination light module, when disposed at the side of the vehicle, is disposed at one of (i) a door handle at the side of the vehicle and (ii) an exterior rearview mirror assembly at the side of the vehicle. 14. A door handle assembly for a vehicle door of a vehicle, said door handle assembly configured to mount at a door handle region of the vehicle door, said door handle assembly comprising: a handle portion pivotally mounted at the door handle region of the vehicle door; wherein said handle portion is disposed at a pocket region of the door handle region; a pocket lighting module comprising at least one light emitting diode operable to emit light to illuminate the pocket region of the door handle region; wherein said pocket lighting module (i) emits red light responsive to a door lock input to illuminate the pocket with red light, (ii) emits green light responsive to a door unlock input to illuminate the pocket with green light, and (iii) emits white light, responsive to receiving a signal from a remote device associated with the vehicle, to provide ground illumination of a ground region at a side of the vehicle at which said door handle assembly is mounted; wherein said pocket lighting module intermittently emits red light responsive to detection of a break in at the vehicle; and wherein said pocket lighting module, responsive to receiving the signal from the remote device associated with the vehicle, and with the signal comprising the door unlock input, (i) emits green light to illuminate the pocket region of the door handle region and (ii) emits white light to provide ground illumination at the side of the vehicle. 15. The door handle assembly of claim 14 , wherein said pocket lighting module is disposed at an inner portion of said handle portion, and wherein a transparent or translucent cover element of said pocket lighting module comprises an inner surface of said inner portion of said handle portion, and wherein light emitted by said pocket lighting module illuminates the pocket region of the door handle region. 16. The door handle assembly of claim 14 , wherein said at least one light emitting diode comprises a plurality of light emitting diodes. 17. The door handle assembly of claim 14 , wherein said at least one light emitting diode of said pocket lighting module is disposed at an end portion of said handle portion, and wherein light emitted by said at least one light emitting diode passes along the handle portion of said door handle assembly. 18.
