Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Air cleaner assemblies and components therefor are described. An example first or main filter cartridge is described which includes a media pack comprising fluted material secured to facing sheets. The media pack defines opposite inlet and outlet flow faces, with flutes extending in a direction therebetween. The cartridge defines a closed end, spaced from, but in overlap with, the outlet end face of the media pack.

What is claimed is: 1. An air filter cartridge removably installable in a housing of an air cleaner; the air filter cartridge comprising: (a) a media pack comprising filter media and defining an inlet flow face and an outlet flow face; (b) an arrangement on the media pack defining a filter cartridge clean air volume within the cartridge and adjacent the outlet flow face of the media pack at a location not surrounded by filter media; (i) the arrangement on the media pack defining an air flow outlet in communication with the filter cartridge clean air volume; and, (d) the arrangement on the media pack including: (i) a housing radial seal; (i) a first side having the air flow outlet therethrough; and, (ii) a second side opposite the first side and the air flow outlet; (A) the second side: including an outwardly directed receiver at a location not surrounded by media and projecting away from the air flow outlet; and, having a portion surrounding the outwardly directed receiver. 2. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the media comprises fluted media secured to facing media; (i) the media pack defining a plurality of flutes extending in a direction generally between the inlet and outlet flow faces. 3. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the media pack comprises a stack of strips of media defining an inlet flow face and an opposite outlet flow face. 4. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the housing radial seal defines a radially outwardly directed seal. 5. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the housing radial seal defines a non-circular shape around the air flow outlet. 6. An air filter cartridge according to claim 5 wherein: (a) the arrangement on the media pack, defining the air cleaner volume; the air flow outlet; and, the outwardly directed receiver, is non-removably secured to the media pack. 7. An air filter cartridge according to claim 5 wherein: (a) the housing radial seal comprises a radially inwardly directed housing radial seal. 8. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the housing radial seal comprises a radially inwardly directed housing radial seal. 9. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the media comprises fluted media secured to facing media; (i) the media pack defining a plurality of flutes extending in a direction generally between the inlet and outlet flow faces; and, (b) the housing radial seal defines a non-circular shape around the air flow outlet. 10. An air filter cartridge according to claim 9 wherein: (a) the housing radial seal comprises a radially inwardly directed housing radial seal. 11. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the air flow outlet is oriented for air flow therethrough in a direction generally orthogonal to a flow direction between the inlet and outlet flow faces. 12. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the arrangement on the media pack defining the air cleaner volume; the air flow outlet and the outwardly directed receiver, is non-removably sealed to the media pack. 13. An air filter cartridge according to claim 12 wherein: (a) a distance X across the filter cartridge clean air volume, in a direction away from the outlet flow face, is at least 50% of Y; Y being a shortest distance across the media pack in a direction perpendicular to a direction of air flow through the media pack. 14. An air filter cartridge according to claim 13 wherein: (a) a distance X across the filter cartridge clean air volume, in a direction away from the outlet flow face, is at least 75% of Y; Y being a shortest distance across the media pack in a direction perpendicular to a direction of air flow through the media pack. 15. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) a distance X across the filter cartridge clean air volume, in a direction away from the outlet flow face, is at least 50% of Y; Y being a distance across the media pack in a direction perpendicular to a direction of air flow through the media pack. 16. An air filter cartridge according to claim 15 wherein: (a) a distance X across the filter cartridge clean air volume, in a direction away from the outlet flow face, is at least 50% of Y; Y being a distance across the media pack in a direction perpendicular to a direction of air flow through the media pack. 17. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the second side includes an outer surface with a receiver recess surrounding the outwardly directed receiver. 18. An air filter cartridge according to claim 17 wherein: (a) the media comprises fluted media secured to facing media; (i) the media pack defining a plurality of flutes extending in a direction generally between the inlet and outlet flow faces; and, (b) the housing radial seal defines a non-circular shape around the air flow outlet. 19. An air cleaner assembly comprising: (a) an air cleaner housing having a sidewall defining an interior; the housing including: a housing air flow inlet arrangement and a housing air flow outlet arrangement; (i) the housing including an access opening with a removable access cover thereover, at a location opposite the housing air flow outlet arrangement; and, (b) a removable and replaceable first air filter cartridge positioned within the housing interior; (i) the first air filter cartridge being sized to for installation and removal when the access cover is removed; (ii) the first air filter cartridge including: (A) a media pack comprising filter media and defining an inlet flow face and an opposite outlet flow face; (B) an arrangement on the media pack defining a filter cartridge clean air volume within the cartridge and adjacent the outlet flow face of the media pack at a location not surrounded by filter media; (1) the arrangement on the media pack defining a cartridge air flow outlet in communication with the filter cartridge clean air volume; and, (C) the arrangement on the media pack including: (1) a housing radial seal; (2) a first side having the cartridge air flow outlet therethrough; and, (3) a second side opposite the first side and the air flow outlet;  (a) the second side: including an outwardly directed receiver at a location not surrounded by media and projecting away from the cartridge air flow outlet; and, having a portion surrounding the outwardly directed receiver; (c) the housing air flow outlet being oriented for outlet flow therethrough in a direction generally orthogonal to direction of the air flow from the inlet flow face to the outlet flow face of the first air filter cartridge; (i) the first air filter cartridge being positioned in the housing with the filter cartridge air flow outlet directed toward, and in air flow alignment with, the housing air flow outlet arrangement. 20.
