Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system for reducing bandwidth and/or reducing power consumed by a display may comprise a display having a background plane and a region of interest plane that may be identified by a gaze tracker. The region of interest may be of a higher quality picture. In some embodiments, the display may be a large panel display and in others a head mounted display (HMD).

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus, comprising, a display to present video; at least one remote panel communicatively coupled to the display, comprising: a background buffer to store a background plane at a first resolution; a plane of interest buffer to store a plane of interest at a second resolution; and a compositor to composite the plane of interest on top of the background plane; and a motion biased foveated renderer to identify a future focus area based on focus information and motion information of a user and to rotate an area of focus based on the motion information, wherein the focus information is also used to adjust performance parameters of a graphics system based at least on where a user is looking, where an application attempts to get the user to look, and where the user is predicted to be looking in the future. 2. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second resolution is higher than the first resolution. 3. The apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first resolution is up sampled by interpolation to match a display resolution while the second resolution matches the display resolution. 4. The apparatus as recited in claim 3 , where in edges of the plane of interest are alpha blended for smooth transitions. 5. The apparatus as recited in claim 1 , further comprising: a gaze tracker to provide an (x, y) coordinate to the compositor to locate the plane of interest with respect to the display. 6. The apparatus as recited in claim 5 , wherein the display comprises a head mounted display (HMD). 7. A method, comprising: storing in a background buffer a background plane at a first resolution; storing in a plane of interest buffer a plane of interest at a second resolution; compositing the plane of interest on top of the background plane to make a composite media; displaying the composite media; identifying a future focus area based on focus information and motion information of a user; and rotating an area of focus based on the motion information, wherein the focus information is also used to adjust performance parameters of a graphics system based at least on where a user is looking, where an application attempts to get the user to look, and where the user is predicted to be looking in the future. 8. The method as recited in claim 7 , wherein the second resolution is higher than the first resolution. 9. The method as recited in claim 8 , further comprising: tracking a gaze of a viewer with respect to a display to provide an (x, y) coordinate to the compositor to locate the plane of interest with respect to the display. 10. The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the first resolution is up sampled by interpolation to match a display resolution while the second resolution matches the display resolution. 11. The method as recited in claim 7 , where in edges of the plane of interest are alpha blended for smooth transitions. 12. The method as recited in claim 7 , wherein the display comprises a head mounted display (HMD). 13. A system, comprising: a head mounted display (HMD); a gaze tracker for tracking a gaze to identify a region of interest; a client communicatively coupled to the HMD; and a motion biased foveated renderer to identify a future focus area based on focus information and motion information of a user and to rotate an area of focus based on the motion information, wherein the client is to send to the HMD a full screen view at a low resolution and a partial screen high resolution view comprising the region of interest, and wherein the focus information is also used to adjust performance parameters of a graphics system based at least on where a user is looking, where an application attempts to get the user to look, and where the user is predicted to be looking in the future. 14. The system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the client and the HMD are wirelessly coupled. 15. The system as recited in claim 13 , wherein the low resolution is up sampled by interpolation to match a display resolution while the second resolution matches the display resolution. 16. The system as recited in claim 13 , where in edges of the region of interest are alpha blended for smooth transitions. 17. The system as recited in claim 13 , further comprising head motion sensors.
