Official abstract text for this publication.
In an exemplary embodiment, image content is rendered to include a digital watermark pattern at an essentially fixed scale, regardless of the size of screen on which the content is displayed. In one particular embodiment, CSS and JavaScript are responsive to the rendering context (which can include screen size, and/or viewer position) to define the geometry of a watermarked texture block, which is tiled to serve as a background of an HTML-defined page. A great variety of other features and arrangements are also detailed.

The invention claimed is: 1. A method comprising the acts: determining a display scale for presentation of information on a display screen; based on said determined display scale, establishing a scale parameter for use in generating a scale-dependent pattern that conveys a plural-bit payload; using said established scale parameter in generating said scale-dependent pattern that conveys the plural-bit payload, said generating employing a hardware processor that is configured to perform said generating act; and combining the scale-dependent pattern with said information, in a combined presentation on said display screen. 2. The method of claim 1 in which the pattern comprises a digital watermark pattern. 3. The method of claim 2 in which the digital watermark pattern comprises a pattern of plural rectangular blocks, said rectangular blocks being tiled on the display screen, and the established scale parameter is a dimension of one of said rectangular blocks, in pixels. 4. The method of claim 3 in which the scale parameter is established such that each of said rectangular blocks has a maximum side dimension of between a half inch and two inches as presented on the display screen, irrespective of said display scale. 5. The method of claim 3 in which the scale parameter is established such that each of said watermark blocks has a maximum side dimension of between 5 and 20 percent of a long dimension of the display screen, irrespective of said display scale. 6. The method of claim 2 that further includes: discerning a change in said display scale, said change being due to user input directing a display window on the display screen to be re-sized, or directing a zoom parameter to be altered; and re-establishing said scale parameter, based on said changed display scale. 7. The method of claim 2 in which the digital watermark pattern is presented as a background over which said information is presented. 8. The method of claim 2 in which the digital watermark pattern is presented as a translucent overlay over said information. 9. A method comprising the acts: detecting a scale change, when information presented to a user on a display screen is changed from a first scale to a second scale; and controlling a scale of a digital watermark pattern also presented on the display screen, so that an absolute value of the scale change of the digital watermark pattern is less than an absolute value of said scale change of the information presented to the user. 10. The method of claim 9 in which the scale change of the information presented to the user is due to user input that directs a size of a graphical window presenting said information on the display screen to be changed. 11. The method of claim 9 in which the scale change of the information presented to the user is due to user input that directs a zoom level at which said information is presented on the display screen to be changed. 12. The method of claim 9 in which: the detecting comprises determining a scale factor by which the information presented to the user is changed; and the controlling comprises applying a reciprocal of said scale factor to the scale of the digital watermark pattern. 13. An apparatus comprising: means for detecting a scale change, when information presented to a user on a display screen is changed from a first scale to a second scale; and means for controlling a scale of a digital watermark pattern also presented on the display screen, so that an absolute value of the scale change of the digital watermark pattern is less than an absolute value of said scale change of the information presented to the user.
