A marker for burying adjacent an underground structure such that a location of the underground structure can be identified from above a ground surface. The marker comprises a housing, a self-orienting beacon retention device disposed within the housing. The self-orienting beacon retention device comprises a coil bobbin, and an inductance-capacitance beacon device carried by the self-orienting beacon retention device. A coil of the LC beacon device is disposed around an exterior surface of the coil bobbin. The self-orienting beacon retention device is structured and operable to orient the coil bobbin and the inductor coil in a desired orientation relative to a ground surface regardless of the orientation of the housing relative to the ground surface.

What is claimed is: 1. A marker for burying adjacent an underground structure such that a location of the underground structure can be identified from above a ground surface, said marker comprising: a housing; a self-orienting beacon retention device movingly disposed within the housing, wherein the self-orienting beacon retention device comprises a coil bobbin; and an inductance-capacitance (LC) beacon device carried by the self-orienting beacon retention device, wherein the LC beacon device comprises: an inductor coil disposed around an exterior surface of the coil bobbin of the self-orienting beacon retention device; and a capacitor operably connected with the inductor coil, wherein the self-orienting beacon retention device is structured and operable to orient the coil bobbin and the inductor coil in a desired orientation relative to a ground surface regardless of the orientation of the housing relative to the ground surface. 2. The marker of claim 1 , wherein the self-orienting beacon retention device comprises a main body component that defines the coil bobbin, and the self-orienting beacon retention device is structured and operable to orient the main body component and inductor coil disposed therearound in the desired orientation relative to the ground surface regardless of the orientation of the housing relative to the ground surface. 3. The marker of claim 2 , wherein the main body component comprises a plurality coil channels disposed around the exterior surface and the inductor coil is disposed within the coil channels. 4. The marker of claim 3 , wherein each of the coil channels comprises a pair of opposing walls that define the respective coil channel, each wall having a gap therein through which the inductor coil can transition from one channel to an adjacent channel. 5. The marker of claim 4 , wherein the gap in each channel wall defines a pair of opposing wall ends, wherein each wall end is beveled to provide a smooth transition of the inductor coil from one channel to the adjacent channel. 6. The marker of claim 5 , wherein the capacitor comprises an integrated circuit board fixedly connected to an interior of the main body component. 7. The marker of claim 2 , wherein the self-orienting beacon retention device comprises a gimbal and the main body component comprises a chassis of an inner gimbal structure of the gimbal, the gimbal further comprising an outer gimbal structure pivotally disposed within the housing, wherein the inner gimbal structure is pivotally disposed within the outer gimbal structure and comprises the chassis that defines the coil bobbin and a pair of opposing pivot pins extending from chassis, and wherein the gimbal is structured and operable to orient the chassis of the inner gimbal structure and the inductor coil disposed therearound in the desired orientation relative to the ground surface regardless of the orientation of the housing relative to the ground surface. 8. The marker of claim 7 , wherein inductor coil is wound around the exterior surface of the inner gimbal chassis such that a greater amount of the coil is wound around a lower portion of the chassis that is below a longitudinal center axis of the pivot pins than an upper portion of the chassis above the longitudinal axis of the pivot pins such that the lower portion of chassis is heavier than the upper portion and a center of gravity of the inner gimbal is below the longitudinal axis of the pivot pins. 9. The marker of claim 8 , wherein the inner gimbal chassis comprises a plurality coil channels disposed around the exterior surface in which the inductor coil is disposed. 10. The marker of claim 9 , wherein each of the coil channels comprises a pair of opposing walls that define the respective coil channel, each wall having a gap therein through which the inductor coil can transition from one channel to an adjacent channel. 11. The marker of claim 10 , wherein the gap in each channel wall defines a pair of opposing wall ends, wherein each wall end is beveled to provide a smooth transition of the inductor coil from one channel to the adjacent channel. 12. The marker of claim 11 , wherein the capacitor comprises an integrated circuit board fixedly connected to an interior of the chassis of the inner gimbal structure. 13. A marker for burying adjacent an underground structure such that a location of the underground structure can be identified from above a ground surface, said marker comprising: a housing; a gimbal beacon retention device pivotally disposed within the housing: an inductance-capacitance (LC) beacon device carried by the gimbal beacon retention device, wherein the LC beacon device comprises an inductor coil and a capacitor operably connected with the inductor coil, wherein the gimbal beacon retention device comprises: an outer gimbal structure pivotally disposed within the housing; and an inner gimbal structure pivotally disposed within the outer gimbal structure, the inner gimbal structure comprising: a chassis that defines a coil bobbin having an exterior surface around which the inductor coil is wound; and a pair of opposing pivot pins extending from chassis that pivotally connect the inner gimbal structure to the outer gimbal structure, wherein the gimbal beacon retention device is structured and operable to orient the chassis of the inner gimbal structure and the inductor coil disposed therearound in the desired orientation relative to the ground surface regardless of the orientation of the housing relative to the ground surface. 14. The marker of claim 13 , wherein inductor coil is wound around the exterior surface of the inner gimbal chassis such that a greater amount of the coil is wound around a lower portion of the chassis that is below a longitudinal center axis of the pivot pins than an upper portion of the chassis above the longitudinal axis of the pivot pins such that the lower portion of chassis is heavier than the upper portion and a center of gravity of the inner gimbal is below the longitudinal axis of the pivot pins. 15. The marker of claim 14 , wherein the inner gimbal chassis comprises a plurality coil channels disposed around the exterior surface and the inductor coil is disposed within the coil channels. 16. The marker of claim 15 , wherein each of the coil channels comprises a pair of opposing walls that define the respective coil channel, each wall having a gap therein through which the inductor coil can transition from one channel to an adjacent channel. 17. The marker of claim 16 , wherein the gap in each channel wall defines a pair of opposing wall ends, wherein each wall end is beveled to provide a smooth transition of the inductor coil from one channel to the adjacent channel. 18. The marker of claim 17 , wherein the capacitor comprises an integrated circuit board fixedly connected to an interior of the chassis of the inner gimbal structure.
