Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A turbocharger assembly can include a shaft sleeve that includes a bore that extends between a compressor end and a turbine end, outer threads that extend to a first axial position from the compressor end, and an outer shoulder at a second, greater axial position from the compressor end; a lock nut that includes inner threads that mate with the outer threads of the shaft sleeve and an axial length that is less than a distance between the compressor end and the first axial position; and a bearing assembly that includes at least one inner race axially located by the outer shoulder of the shaft sleeve and axially located by the lock nut.

What is claimed is: 1. A turbocharger assembly comprising: a shaft sleeve that comprises a bore that extends between a compressor end and a turbine end, outer threads, and an outer shoulder; an inner lock nut that comprises inner threads that mate with the outer threads of the shaft sleeve; a bearing assembly that comprises at least one inner race axially located by the outer shoulder of the shaft sleeve and axially located by the inner lock nut; a housing that comprises a housing bore; a cartridge received in the housing bore wherein the cartridge comprises a cartridge bore, wherein the bearing assembly is received in the cartridge bore; an outer lock nut that comprises outer threads wherein the cartridge bore comprises inner threads that mate with the outer threads of the outer lock nut; an elastically deformable seal element disposed between the housing bore and the cartridge that, upon elastic deformation, provides for an amount of radial movement of the cartridge in the housing bore; and an extension of a locating component received in a recess of the cartridge dimensioned to provide for an amount of axial movement of the cartridge in the housing bore. 2. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 wherein the inner lock nut comprises a set screw that is rotatable to contact the outer threads of the shaft sleeve. 3. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 wherein the bearing assembly comprises a first inner race, a second inner race and an inner ring disposed axially between the first inner race and the second inner race. 4. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 comprising a shaft received in the bore of the shaft sleeve. 5. The turbocharger assembly of claim 4 comprising a thrust collar and a compressor wheel disposed on the shaft wherein the thrust collar is disposed between the compressor wheel and the shaft sleeve. 6. The turbocharger assembly of claim 5 wherein the thrust collar is located by another outer shoulder of the shaft sleeve. 7. The turbocharger assembly of claim 5 wherein an axial clearance exists between the inner lock nut and the thrust collar such that the thrust collar does not contact the inner lock nut. 8. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 wherein the outer lock nut comprises an axial length that is less than the axial length of the inner look nut. 9. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 wherein the bearing assembly comprises at least one angular contact ball bearing. 10. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 wherein the shaft sleeve comprises an electric motor rotor. 11. The turbocharger assembly of claim 10 comprising an electric motor stator that drives the electric motor rotor. 12. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 comprising a shaft received by the shaft sleeve wherein the shaft comprises a hub portion and wherein the turbine end of the shaft sleeve contacts the hub portion. 13. The turbocharger assembly of claim 12 comprising a compressor wheel disposed on the shaft, a thrust collar disposed on the shaft and a nut disposed on the shaft wherein the nut applies a load to the compressor wheel, the thrust collar and the shaft sleeve between the nut and the hub portion of the shaft. 14. The turbocharger assembly of claim 13 wherein the bearing assembly is independent of the applied load to the compressor wheel, the thrust collar and the shaft sleeve between the nut and the hub portion of the shaft. 15. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 wherein the elastically deformable seal element comprises an elastomeric material. 16. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 wherein the housing bore comprises a lubricant opening and wherein the cartridge comprises a lubricant opening. 17. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 comprising two of the elastically deformable seal elements. 18. The turbocharger assembly of claim 17 wherein the housing bore comprises a lubricant opening and wherein the cartridge comprises a lubricant opening wherein the lubricant openings are positioned axially between axial locations of the two elastically deformable seal elements. 19. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 wherein the cartridge is a compressor side cartridge. 20. The turbocharger assembly of claim 1 wherein the cartridge is a turbine side cartridge.
