Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present invention includes an apparatus and corresponding method for concentrating analytes within a fluid flowing through a tube using acoustic radiation pressure. The apparatus includes a function generator that outputs a radio frequency electrical signal to a transducer that transforms the radio frequency electric signal to an acoustic signal and couples the acoustic signal to the tube. The acoustic signal is converted within the tube to acoustic pressure that concentrates the analytes within the fluid.

What is claimed is: 1. A method, comprising: introducing a fluid comprising a plurality of particles into a tube that is comprised in a system, the tube having a central axis and the system having a natural resonance frequency when the fluid is contained within the tube; applying, with a transducer, an acoustic signal to the tube so as to effect vibration of the tube and give rise to an acoustic radiation pressure within the tube; adjusting a frequency of the acoustic signal to the natural resonance frequency of the system such that the acoustic signal radially concentrates at least some of the particles toward the central axis of the tube; and optically interrogating at least some of the concentrated particles. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising monitoring a displacement of the tube. 3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising adjusting a characteristic of the acoustic signal in response to the displacement of the tube. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the characteristic of the acoustic signal is a frequency of the acoustic signal. 5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the monitoring is performed by a second transducer that provides a tuning signal related to the displacement of the tube. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising automatic adjustment of the acoustic signal so as to compensate for temperature. 7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting a frequency of the vibration such that system maintains the resonant frequency of the system. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first transducer effects the vibration of the tube. 9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising driving the acoustic radiation pressure at less than ¼ the wave thickness of a wall of the tube. 10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising operating a second transducer so as maintain the vibration of the system at the natural resonance frequency of the system. 11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising operating a second transducer so as to provide an electronic feedback used in tuning the vibration of the system to the natural resonant frequency of the system. 12. A system, the system comprising: a tube having a central axis and a length, the system having a natural resonance frequency when a fluid is flowing within the tube, an acoustic signal transducer coupled to the tube, the transducer being configured to applying an acoustic signal of a frequency to the tube, during operation, such that the length of the tube is vibrated at the natural resonance frequency of the system to give rise to an acoustic radiation pressure within the tube that radially concentrates at least some of a population of particles disposed within the tube toward the central axis of the tube; and a function generator coupled to the acoustic signal producing transducer, the function generator outputting an electrical signal related to the acoustic signal producing transducer to drive the acoustic signal producing transducer and maintain the vibration of the tube at the natural resonance frequency of the system. 13. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a source of illumination disposed so as to illuminate at least a portion of the tube. 14. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a detector configured to detect one or more signals related to passage of a particle through the illuminated portion of the tube. 15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the system comprises a second transducer, the second transducer being configured to monitor a displacement of the tube, the second transducer outputting a signal related to the displacement of the tube, the signal being used to adjust the acoustic signal applied by the acoustic signal producing transducer. 16. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a source of illumination configured to illuminate an interrogation volume within the tube. 17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising a detector configured to collect a signal from particles illuminated within the interrogation volume. 18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the system is configured to, during operation, effect a core fluid velocity of less than about 1 m/s for particles illuminated within the interrogation volume. 19. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a second transducer, the second transducer being configured to, when operating, tune a vibration of the system to the natural resonant frequency of the system. 20. The system of claim 19 , further comprising a second transducer configured to provide an electronic feedback for tuning a vibration of the system to the natural resonant frequency of the system.
