Official abstract text for this publication.
Systems, methods and apparatus are disclosed for providing content associated with an information item on a distribution item using a computing device. In one aspect a method includes identifying an image of an information item on a distribution item. The method further includes processing, in a processor the image, to generate a data item determined by the information item. The method further includes decoding the data item to determine a set of attributes of the distribution item. The method further includes retrieving content associated with the distribution item using at least one of the attributes in the set of attributes. The method further includes delivering content associated with the distribution item.

What is claimed is: 1. A computerized method comprising: receiving a digital image of a portion of a distribution item captured via a computing device following a physical delivery of the distribution item to a recipient identified on the distribution item; identifying, using a processor, an information item shown in the digital image of the portion of the distribution item; identifying a type for the information item; extracting a data item from the digital image using the type; decoding the data item using the type to generate a set of attributes of the distribution item; retrieving, over a network accessed by the computing device, content associated with a sender of the distribution item using an attribute included in the set of attributes; causing display of the content to the recipient via a user interface on the computing device, the content being associated with the sender of the distribution item; and receiving the information item from a distribution entity to route and track the distribution item for physical delivery. 2. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the information item comprises identifying a barcode, and wherein processing the digital image to generate the data item comprises generating a character string using the barcode. 3. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the information item comprises identifying at least one of an image, a stamp, and a combination of an image and an encoded value. 4. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein decoding the data item to generate the set of attributes comprises generating an identifier corresponding to a mailer of the distribution item and wherein causing display of the content comprises causing display of at least one of a product or service offering associated with the mailer. 5. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein decoding the data item to generate the set of attributes comprises generating at least one of a barcode identifier, a service type identifier, a mailer identifier, a distribution item identifier, and a routing code. 6. The computerized method of claim 5 , further comprising: determining the set of attributes is invalid; and providing an error message to the computing device. 7. The computerized method of claim 2 , wherein decoding the data item and retrieving the content comprises: transmitting the character string over a network to a server; decoding the character string to determine the set of attributes of the distribution item; retrieving the content associated with the sender of the distribution item using at least one of the attributes in the set of attributes; and receiving a response from the server comprising at least a portion of the content associated with the sender of the distribution item. 8. The computerized method of claim 7 , wherein receiving the response comprises receiving a link to the content associated with the sender of the distribution item, and wherein causing the computing device to display the content includes causing display, in a web browser, of the content using the link. 9. The computerized method of claim 2 , wherein retrieving the content comprises: transmitting the identified image of the encoded value over a network to a server; decoding the character string to determine a set of attributes of the distribution item; retrieving the content associated with the sender of the distribution item using at least one of the attributes in the set of attributes; and receiving a response from the server comprising at least a portion of the content associated with the sender of the distribution item. 10. The computerized method of claim 9 , wherein the response comprises a link to the content associated with the sender of the distribution item, and wherein causing the computing device to display the content includes causing display, in a web browser, of the content using the link. 11. The computerized method of claim 2 , wherein the barcode comprises at least one of an intelligent mail barcode and a height modulated barcode including four states, wherein the intelligent mail barcode includes encoded tracking information and encoded routing information. 12. The computerized method of claim 2 , wherein identifying the barcode comprises identifying a number of vertical bars, and wherein each of the number of vertical is one of an ascender bar, a descender bar, a full bar, or a tracker bar, and wherein generating the character string comprises including a character in the character string for a letter corresponding to one of the ascender bar, descender bar, full bar, or tracker bar. 13. The computerized method of claim 1 , further comprising providing an overlay frame on a display device of the computing device, the overlay frame identifying an area for the data item. 14. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the digital image comprises receiving a stream of digital images from the computing device, the stream of digital images including the digital image, a first additional digital image, and a second additional digital image. 15. The computerized method of claim 14 , further comprising: extracting a first additional data item from the first additional digital image using the type; and extracting a second additional data item from the second additional digital image using the type; wherein decoding the data item using the type to generate the set of attributes comprises: decoding the data item to generate a first interpretation of the set of attributes, decoding the first additional data item to generate a second interpretation of the set of attributes; decoding the second additional data item to generate a third interpretation of the set of attributes; and determining a correlation between the first interpretation, the second interpretation, and the third interpretation of the set of attributes. 16. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein extracting the data item comprises: scanning horizontal lines in the digital image to identify an area of the digital image with a determined number of vertical lines; locating a center line of the digital image; and determining the heights and positions of each vertical line, and wherein decoding the data item comprises: associating each vertical line with a character determined by the height and position of each vertical line; and combining the character for each vertical line to form the character string. 17. The computerized method of claim 1 further comprising displaying the information item on a display device of the computing devise. 18. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the information item comprises identifying a product shown in the digital image of the portion of the distribution item, and wherein causing display of the content comprises causing display of interactive product information about the product. 19. The computerized method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the information item comprises identifying art intelligent mail barcode, and wherein causing display of the content comprises causing display of interactive product information about a product being advertised in the distribution item, and wherein the intelligent mail barcode includes encoded tracking information and encoded routing information. 20. A computing device for processing a distribution item, the device comprising: means for receiving a digital image of a portion of a distribution item captured follow log a physical delivery of the distribution item to a recipient identified
