Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A filter element, a safety element and fluid cleaner assembly. The fluid cleaner assembly generally includes a housing having a cover and a primary fluid cleaner section. The element generally comprises z-filter media, arranged in a straight through configuration, and an axial seal gasket positioned to extend continuously around at outer perimeter of the straight through flow construction. The fluid cleaner assembly can have a precleaner positioned therein. Methods of assembly and use are provided.

What is claimed is: 1. An air filter cartridge comprising: (a) a z-filter media construction having an inlet flow face, an opposite outlet flow face, and a non-circular outer perimeter, wherein the z-filter media construction comprises: (i) a coiled construction of fluted media secured to non-fluted media; and (ii) a receiving socket in the outlet flow face; (b) a frame member secured to the z-filter media construction and including a seal support extending away from the z-filter media construction; and (c) a seal member attached to the seal support and constructed to provide a seal with an air cleaner housing. 2. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 further wherein: (a) the receiving socket comprises a non-cylindrical core construction within said z-filter media construction, the non-cylindrical core construction having opposing walls defining an open volume therebetween. 3. An air filter cartridge according to claim 2 wherein: (a) the opposing walls of the non-cylindrical receiving socket are joined by curved ends. 4. An air filter cartridge according to claim 2 wherein: (a) the opposing walls of the non-cylindrical receiving socket define a gap of not more than about 20 mm. 5. An air filter cartridge according to claim 2 wherein: (a) the non-cylindrical core construction defines first and second receiver pockets. 6. An air filter cartridge according to claim 5 wherein: (a) non-cylindrical core construction comprises a centering structure that divides the first and second receiver pockets. 7. An air filter cartridge according to claim 6 wherein: (a) the centering structure of the non-cylindrical core construction is constructed to help center the air filter cartridge when installing the air filter cartridge in an air cleaner housing. 8. An air filter cartridge according to claim 2 wherein: (a) the non-cylindrical core construction is constructed to receive a handle arrangement from a safety filter installed in an air cleaner housing. 9. An air filter cartridge according to claim 2 wherein: (a) the non-cylindrical core construction extends completely between the inlet flow face and the outlet flow face of said z-filter media construction. 10. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) said z-filter media construction includes a plurality of flutes; each of said flutes having an upstream portion adjacent to said inlet flow face and a downstream portion adjacent to said outlet flow face; wherein selected ones of said flutes being open at said upstream portion and closed at said downstream portion; and selected ones of said flutes being closed at said upstream portion and open at said downstream portion. 11. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) said z-filter media construction has a racetrack-shaped cross-section. 12. An air filter cartridge according to claim 11 wherein: (a) said z-filter media construction has opposite straight sections joined by opposite rounded end sections. 13. An air filter cartridge according to claim 12 wherein: (a) the opposite rounded end sections are semi-circular; and (b) the opposite straight sections are parallel to each other. 14. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) said z-filter media construction has an oval-shaped cross-section. 15. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) the seal support of said frame member extends radially away from said z-filter media construction. 16. An air filter cartridge according to claim 15 wherein: (a) said seal support extends completely, peripherally, around said z-filter media construction. 17. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) said seal member includes a portion located within 5 mm of one of the flow faces. 18. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) said frame member includes a band secured to the non-circular outer perimeter of said z-filter media construction. 19. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) said frame member includes a portion extending over one of the flow faces. 20. An air filter cartridge according to claim 19 wherein: (a) the portion extending over one of flow faces extends from the non-circular outer perimeter of said z-filter media construction. 21. An air filter cartridge according to claim 19 wherein: (a) the portion extending over one of the flow faces comprises a lip. 22. An air filter cartridge according to claim 1 wherein: (a) said frame member further includes a brace construction that provides the strength to the air filter cartridge. 23. An air filter cartridge according to claim 22 wherein: (a) the brace construction is provided extending over the inlet flow face of said z-filter media construction. 24. An air filter cartridge comprising: (a) a z-filter media construction having an inlet flow face, an opposite outlet flow face, and a non-circular outer perimeter, wherein the z-filter media construction comprises: (i) a coiled construction of fluted media secured to non-fluted media and including a plurality of flutes, each of said flutes having upstream portion adjacent to said inlet flow face and a downstream portion adjacent to said outlet flow face, wherein selected ones of said flutes being open at said upstream portion and closed at said downstream portion, and selected ones of said flutes being closed at said upstream portion and open at said downstream portion; (ii) a receiving socket in the outlet flow face; and (iii) a non-cylindrical core construction within the receiving socket of said z-filter media construction, wherein the non-cylindrical core construction includes opposing walls joined by ends and is constructed to receive a projection when the air filter cartridge is installed in an air cleaner housing; (b) a frame member secured to the z-filter media construction and including a seal support extending away from the z-filter media construction; and (c) a seal member attached to the seal support and constructed to provide a seal with an air cleaner housing.
