This application relates to branched diester compositions that can be used as a base stock for lubricant applications, or as a base stock blend component for use in a finished lubricant or for particular applications, and methods for making the same.

The invention claimed is: 1. A compound of a formula: wherein: R is a C 1 -C 36 alkyl group, and R 1 is a C 1 -C 36 alkyl group. 2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R is 2-ethylhexyl, isobutyl, n-hexyl, or n-octyl. 3. The compound of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is n-heptyl, n-nonyl, or n-undecyl. 4. The compound of claim 2 , wherein R 1 is n-heptyl, n-nonyl, or n-undecyl. 5. The compound of claim 1 , which is octyl 9-(octanoyloxy)decanoate.
