The invention claimed is: 1. An apparatus for reducing content of mercury in a fluid hydrocarbon, comprising: a vessel having an inlet and an outlet; wherein the vessel contains at least one 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer and is configured to contact a fluid hydrocarbon having a mercury content with the 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer is bound to a porous filter or to one or more sheets through which the fluid hydrocarbon. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer is in the form of particles. 4. The apparatus of claim 3 , further comprising: a filter, a centrifuge, and/or other separation device for separating the fluid hydrocarbon from the particles. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the vessel has at least one surface in contact with the fluid hydrocarbon which is coated or lined with the 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer comprises reacted units of: benzene-1,4-diamine, formaldehyde, and at least one diaminoalkane selected from the group consisting of 1,4-diaminobutane, 1,6-diaminohexane, 1-8-diaminooctane, 1,10-diaminodecane, and 1,12-diaminododecane. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer is crosslinked and has structural units of the following formula: 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer has structural units of the following formula 9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer is coordinated to a mercury compound as follows: 10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer is a coating on particles and/or granules of an inorganic substrate. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the vessel is a column that is at least partially packed with the particles and/or granules.
