A vertebral body replacement device, dimensioned for implantation between a first and second vertebral bone is described. The vertebral body replacement device includes a superior endcap, an inferior endcap and a central core between the superior and inferior endcaps. The vertebral body replacement device further includes a fusion aperture extending through the superior and inferior endcaps and central core. The vertebral body replacement device is made of radiolucent material and can be implanted from a lateral or anterior approach to the spine.

What is claimed is: 1. A vertebral body replacement device dimensioned for implantation between a first and second vertebral bone, comprising: a superior endcap comprising a first bone contacting base and a first body portion, said superior endcap having a first maximum base perimeter at the first bone contacting base and a first maximum body perimeter at the first body portion, the first maximum base perimeter encompassing the first maximum body perimeter therewithin, said first body portion including a first mating feature opposite said first bone contacting base, and said superior endcap including a first fusion aperture extending through the first bone contacting base and the first body portion; an inferior endcap comprising a second bone contacting base and a second body portion, said inferior endcap having a second maximum base perimeter at said second bone contacting base said second body portion including a second mating feature opposite said second bone contacting base, and said inferior endcap including a second fusion aperture extending through the second bone contacting base and the second body portion; and a central core having a superior mating feature corresponding to said first mating feature of the superior endcap and an inferior mating feature corresponding to said second mating feature of the inferior endcap, wherein each of said superior mating feature and the inferior mating feature is configured to couple a corresponding mating section on an inserter for inserting the vertebral body replacement device and allow sliding of the central core relative to the superior and inferior endcaps translationally along a direction perpendicular to a superior-inferior direction of the vertebral body replacement device, said central core having a third maximum perimeter that is less than the first maximum perimeter and less than the second maximum perimeter, said central core further including a third fusion aperture extending therethrough. 2. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 1 , wherein the first maximum base perimeter and the second maximum base perimeter are equal to one another. 3. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 1 , wherein the first maximum base perimeter and second maximum base perimeter are rectangular in shape. 4. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 1 , wherein the central core further comprising one or more holes for allowing coupling to one or more pins of the inserter for lateral insertion of said vertebral body replacement device. 5. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 1 is configured for a lateral insertion. 6. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 1 , wherein each of said superior mating feature and the inferior mating feature is configured to allow sliding of said central core translationally onto said superior endcap and inferior endcap after said superior endcap and said inferior endcap are placed into position inside a patient. 7. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 6 , wherein one or both of said superior mating feature and said inferior mating feature extends in a direction perpendicular to the superior-inferior direction of the vertebral body replacement device, and wherein the one or both of said superior mating feature and said inferior mating feature comprises two grooves or flanges opposite each other and extending in parallel. 8. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 1 , wherein the central core further comprises one or more protruding guides at or near a top thereof that couples with a groove of said superior endcap or inferior endcap thereby helping position the central core into the first mating feature or the second mating feature. 9. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 1 , wherein the central core further comprises one or more protrusions on said first mating feature or inferior mating feature to increase friction between the central core and the superior and inferior endcaps. 10. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 1 , wherein more than two of the first, second, and third aperture are connected. 11. A vertebral body replacement device dimensioned for implantation between a first and second vertebral bone, comprising: a superior endcap comprising a first bone contacting base and a first body portion, said superior endcap having a first maximum base perimeter at the first bone contacting base and a first maximum body perimeter at the first body portion, the first maximum base perimeter encompassing the first maximum body perimeter, said first body portion including, said first body portion including a first mating feature opposite said first bone contacting base; an inferior endcap comprising a second bone contacting base and a second body portion, said inferior endcap having a second maximum base perimeter at said second bone contacting base said second body portion including a second mating feature opposite said second bone contacting base; and a central core having a superior mating feature corresponding to the first mating feature of the superior endcap of the vertebral body replacement device and an inferior mating feature corresponding to the second mating feature of the inferior endcap of the vertebral body replacement device, wherein each of said superior mating feature and inferior mating feature is configured to couple a corresponding mating section on an inserter for inserting said vertebral body replacement device and allow sliding of the central core relative to the superior and inferior endcaps translationally along a direction perpendicular to a superior-inferior direction of the vertebral body replacement device, said central core having a maximum perimeter that is less than the first maximum perimeter of said superior endcap and less than the second maximum perimeter of said inferior endcap. 12. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 11 , wherein the superior endcap further comprising a second fusion aperture extending through the first bone contacting base and the first body portion. 13. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 12 , wherein the inferior endcap further comprising a third fusion aperture extending through the second bone contacting base and the second body portion. 14. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 13 , wherein the first maximum base perimeter and the second maximum base perimeter are equal to one another. 15. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 13 , wherein said central core further includes a first fusion aperture extending therethrough, and wherein the first maximum base perimeter and second maximum base perimeter are rectangular in shape and wherein more than two of the first, second, and third aperture are connected. 16. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 13 , wherein each of said superior mating feature and the inferior mating feature is configured to allow sliding of said central core translationally onto said superior endcap and said inferior endcap after said superior endcap and said inferior endcap are placed into position inside a patient. 17. The vertebral body replacement device of claim 13 , wherein the central core further comprises one or more protruding guides at or near a top thereof that couples with a groove of said superior endcap or inferior endcap thereby helping position the central core into the first mating feature or the second mating feature. 18.
