Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Reaction products and methods for making and using such reaction products are provided. For example, a reaction product comprising an adduct formed from urea, formaldehyde, and a urease inhibitor is described, which can be provided in various forms. For example, such a reaction product can be in the form of a solid or solution. Such a reaction product can also be combined with one or more additional components, including but not limited to, additional urease inhibitor and/or a nitrogen-based fertilizer composition.

We claim: 1. A composition comprising a urea-formaldehyde concentrate (UFC) and one or more adducts of N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), urea, and formaldehyde, wherein the one or more adducts comprise about 1% by weight to about 70% by weight of the composition. 2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the one more adducts of N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) are represented by the following structure: 3. The composition of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the composition is substantially free of dicyandiamide. 4. The composition of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the UFC comprises urea and formaldehyde in a total amount of at least 50% by weight or greater. 5. The composition of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the UFC comprises urea and formaldehyde in a total amount of at least 75% by weight or greater. 6. The composition of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the UFC comprises formaldehyde in an amount of at least 50% or greater. 7. The composition of claim 1 or 2 , wherein the UFC comprises urea in an amount of at least 15% or greater. 8. The composition of claim 1 or 2 , further comprising unreacted NBPT. 9. The composition of claim 8 , wherein the unreacted NBPT comprises about 10% by weight to about 90% by weight of the composition. 10. The composition of claim 1 or 2 wherein the composition is a liquid. 11. A method of making a urease inhibiting urea-formaldehyde concentrate, the method comprising combining N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) with urea and formaldehyde in amounts suitable to form the concentrate including one or more adducts of the NBPT, urea, and formaldehyde, wherein the one or more adducts comprise about 1% by weight to about 70% by weight of the concentrate. 12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the method comprises adding the NBPT to a pre-formed urea-formaldehyde concentrate. 13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the method comprises combining the NBPT with urea from a first source and formaldehyde from a second source. 14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the method comprises providing a combination of urea and NBPT to a formaldehyde absorber receiving formaldehyde. 15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the NBPT, urea, and formaldehyde are combined in amounts such that the formed concentrate comprises at least 75% by weight of the urea and the formaldehyde. 16. A method of making a urease inhibiting urea-formaldehyde concentrate, the method comprising combining N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) with urea and formaldehyde in amounts suitable to form the concentrate including one or more adducts of the NBPT, urea, and formaldehyde, wherein the NBPT, urea, and formaldehyde are combined in amounts such that the formed concentrate comprises about 10% by weight to about 90% by weight of one or more adducts of the NBPT. 17. A method of forming a urea fertilizer, the method comprising adding to molten urea a mixture comprising a urea-formaldehyde concentrate (UFC) and one or more adducts of N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT), urea, and formaldehyde, wherein the one more adducts of N-(n-butyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) are represented by the following structure: 18. The method of claim 17 , comprising combining NBPT with the UFC prior to adding the mixture to the molten urea. 19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the NBPT is injected into a stream of the UFC that is being delivered to the molten urea.
