Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system includes a remote computer device and a patient bed in communication with the remote computer device. The patient bed has circuitry operable by a user to obtain at least one software application from the remote computer device. The system also has an authentication software module that verifies that the at least one software application is authorized for use on the patient bed.

The invention claimed is: 1. A system for use in a healthcare facility having a plurality of patient rooms, the system comprising a plurality of patient care devices located in a first patient room of the plurality of patient rooms, wherein the plurality of patient care devices includes a patient bed and a lift that is separate from the patient bed and that is configured to lift a patient, an application server located remotely from the first patient room, the application server having stored therein application software associated with each patient care device of the plurality of patient care devices, and at least one universal caregiver interface situated in the first patient room and in communication with the application server, the at least one universal caregiver interface receiving application software from the application server adapted to control movement of a movable component of each patient care device of the plurality of patient care devices including the patient bed and the lift, the application software for each patient care device being sent to the at least one universal caregiver interface from the application server automatically in response to presence of the respective patient care device being detected in the first patient room, the at least one universal caregiver interface then being adapted to be used to control the operation of each of the plurality of patient care devices in accordance with the application software, wherein the application server also sends validation information to each of the patient care devices in the first patient room, the validation information adapted to enable the patient care devices to confirm that received device command messages sent from the at least one universal caregiver interface are authorized commands for controlling movement of the movable component of the patient care devices, wherein the lift comprises a ceiling lift, wherein at least one of the patient care devices other than the patient bed and the ceiling lift lacks any user inputs thereon but is configured to be controlled by the at least one universal caregiver interface in accordance with the respective application software, wherein the at least one universal caregiver interface includes an input that, when selected, results in the universal caregiver interface sending messages to set a bed scale of the patient bed to zero, to open at least one motorized window blind of the first patient room, and to cancel one or more room notifications associated with the first patient room, wherein the patient bed includes a web browser adapted to enable the caregiver or patient to obtain at least one web-based application from a remote computer device and wherein an authentication software module verifies that the at least one web-based application is authorized for use on the patient bed, the at least one web-based application being unusable on the patient bed until verification has occurred. 2. The system of claim 1 wherein the authentication software module is stored in the circuitry of the patient bed. 3. The system of claim 1 wherein the authentication software module is stored in the remote computer device. 4. The system of claim 1 wherein the authentication software module uses serial number approval to verify that the at least one software application is authorized for use on the patient bed. 5. The system of claim 1 wherein the authentication software module uses secure certificate exchange to verify that the at least one software application is authorized for use on the patient bed. 6. The system of claim 1 wherein the authentication software module uses a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) to verify that the at least one software application is authorized for use on the patient bed. 7. The system of claim 1 wherein the circuitry of the patient bed prioritizes core bed functionality over functionality of the at least one software application. 8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the circuitry of the patient bed uses a publish/subscribe engine to prioritize messages. 9. The system of claim 1 further comprising a patient interface that is used by a patient to communicate with the remote computer device. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the patient interface is also used to control the patient bed. 11. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least one software application comprises an electronic medical records (EMR) software application. 12. The system of claim 1 wherein the user interface is used to initiate downloading of the at least one software application to the circuitry of the patient bed. 13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry of the patient bed has a Universal Serial Bus (USB) to Ethernet interface for direct access to a network. 14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the circuitry of the patient bed has at least one pre-authenticated software module stored therein for at least one of communication and control of a device other than the patient bed. 15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface includes an input for bed exit coordination in which the lift is moved to a use position, a bed exit alarm of the patient bed is suppressed, and a patient exit from the patient bed is charted to an electronic medical records (EMR) computer device located remotely from the room. 16. The system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one motorized window blind, a thermostat to control room temperature, and at least one room light, the user interface being usable to control the operation of each of the at least one motorized window blind, the thermostat, and the at least one room light in accordance with environment controls application software. 17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the user interface includes an input that is selected to place the room in a night mode in which the at least one motorized window blind is closed, the thermostat is adjusted, the at least one room light is turned off, and a bed exit system of the patient bed is enabled. 18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the infusion pump is usable to deliver medicine to a patient and wherein the user interface is usable to initiate the delivery of the medicine to the patient by operation of the infusion pump.
