Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems, methods and apparatus are disclosed for selecting an agricultural input. First and second seed meters selectively meter seed from first and second sources, respectively, into a common planting trench. In some embodiments the seed meters are selectively operated by electric motors controlled with reference to a seed type prescription. In some embodiments the first and second seed meters deposit seeds along a common plane.

The invention claimed is: 1. An agricultural seed planter, comprising: a row unit configured to open a planting trench; a first seed meter disposed to plant seeds in said trench; a first electric drive configured to selectively drive a first seed disc in a first direction about a first axis of said first seed meter; a second seed meter disposed to plant seeds in said trench; a second electric drive configured to selectively drive a second seed disc in a second direction about a second axis of said second seed meter, said second axis parallel to said first axis and said second direction opposite said first direction; and a controller in data communication with said first electric drive and said second electric drive, said controller configured to generate a drive command signal to alternatively drive said first electric drive and said second electric drive. 2. The agricultural seed planter of claim 1 , further comprising: a seed conveyance device, wherein said first seed meter is disposed to deposit seeds into said seed conveyance device, wherein said second seed meter is disposed to deposit seeds into said seed conveyance device, and wherein said seed conveyance device is disposed to deposit seeds into said trench. 3. The agricultural seed planter of claim 2 , wherein said seed conveyance device comprises a seed tube disposed such that seeds fall by gravity through said seed tube into said trench. 4. The agricultural seed planter of claim 2 , wherein said seed conveyance device comprises a motor-driven seed conveyor, wherein said seed conveyor has an upper end and a lower end, wherein said seed conveyor is configured to convey seed from said upper end to said lower end such that seed released from said lower end falls into said trench by gravity. 5. The agricultural seed planter of claim 2 , wherein said first seed disc is configured to release seeds from said first seed meter, wherein said second seed disc is configured to release seeds from said second seed meter, and wherein said seeds released from said first seed disc and said second seed disc travel along a common longitudinal vertical plane through an exit chute and intersecting said trench, said common longitudinal vertical plane intersecting an upper opening in said seed conveyance device. 6. The agricultural seed planter of claim 5 , wherein said first seed meter and said second seed meter are configured to release seeds along arcuate paths toward said common longitudinal vertical plane. 7. The agricultural seed planter of claim 5 , wherein said exit chute comprises a guide surface configured to guide seeds toward said common longitudinal vertical plane. 8. The agricultural seed planter of claim 1 , further comprising: a first bulk seed hopper mounted separately from said row unit, said first bulk seed hopper in seed communication with said first seed meter; and a second bulk seed hopper mounted separately from said row unit, said second bulk seed hopper in seed communication with said second seed meter. 9. The agricultural seed planter of claim 1 , further comprising: a global positioning system receiver in data communication with said controller, said global positioning system receiver configured to report a current geo-referenced location of the planter to said controller; and a memory in data communication with said controller, wherein said memory contains a seed variety map, wherein said seed variety map associates a plurality of geo-referenced locations with a first seed variety, wherein said seed variety map associates a plurality of geo-referenced locations with a second seed variety, wherein said memory contains an association between said first electric drive and said first seed variety, wherein said memory contains an association between said second electric drive and said second seed variety, and wherein said controller is configured to command only said first electric drive to operate when said current geo-referenced location is associated with said first seed variety. 10. The agricultural seed planter of claim 9 , wherein said controller is configured to determine an estimated time to a variety boundary in said seed variety map, wherein said memory contains a predetermined delay required to stop said first seed meter from planting, and wherein said controller is configured to command said first electric drive to stop operating when said estimated time is equal to said predetermined delay. 11. The agricultural seed planter of claim 1 , wherein said first seed meter comprises a first side housing, wherein said second seed meter comprises a second side housing, and wherein said first seed meter and said second seed meter are joined together so that said first and second seed side housings comprise a unitary part, said unitary part defining an exit chute disposed to deliver seeds released by said first seed meter and said second seed meter with said seeds being released from said first seed meter and said second seed meter along a common longitudinal vertical plane through said exit chute and intersecting said trench. 12. The agricultural seed planter of claim 11 , wherein said first seed disc is configured to release seeds from said first seed meter, wherein said second seed disc is configured to release seeds from said second seed meter, and wherein said seeds released from said first seed disc and said second seed disc travel along said common longitudinal vertical plane through said exit chute and intersecting said trench. 13. An agricultural seed planter, comprising: a row unit configured to open a planting trench; a first seed meter mounted to said row unit, said first seed meter having a first side housing; a first electric drive configured to selectively drive a first seed disc in a first direction about a first axis of said first seed meter; a second seed meter mounted to said row unit, said second seed meter having a second side housing, wherein said first side housing and said second side housing are joined together and share a common opening through which seeds are released by said first seed meter and said second seed meter along a common longitudinal vertical plane through said common opening and intersecting said trench; a second electric drive configured to selectively drive a second seed disc in a second direction about a second axis of said second seed meter, said second axis parallel to said first axis and said second direction opposite said first direction; a controller in data communication with said first electric drive and said second electric drive, said controller configured to alternately command said first and second electric drives to operate; and a seed conveyance device mounted to said row unit and disposed to receive said released seeds. 14. The agricultural seed planter of claim 13 , wherein said seed conveyance device is disposed to release seeds into said trench. 15. The agricultural seed planter of claim 14 , wherein said seed conveyance device comprises a seed tube disposed such that seeds fall by gravity through said seed tube into said trench. 16. The agricultural seed planter of claim 14 , wherein said seed conveyance device comprises a motor-driven seed conveyor, wherein said seed conveyor has an upper end and a lower end, wherein said seed conveyor is configured to convey seed from said upper end to said lower such that seed released from said lower end falls into said trench by gravity. 17.
