Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An apparatus for cutting a pipe has a base comprising a pipe support having at least one set of lower rollers and an upper frame supporting a cutting apparatus and at least one upper roller. The upper frame is moveable relative to the base between an open position in which the pipe may be inserted between the at least one set of lower rollers and the at least one upper roller, and a clamping position in which the pipe is in contact with the at least one set of lower rollers and the at least one upper roller. The cutting apparatus comprises a grooving member configured to provide an annular groove on an outer surface of the pipe, a cutting member configured to cut the pipe, and a chamfering member configured to provide a chamfer on the outer surface of the pipe between a location of the annular groove and a location of the cut in the pipe.

The invention claimed is: 1. An apparatus for cutting a pipe, the apparatus comprising: (a) a base comprising a pipe support having at least one set of lower rollers; (b) an upper frame supporting a cutting apparatus and at least one upper roller, the upper frame being moveable relative to the base between an open position in which the pipe may be inserted between the at least one set of lower rollers and the at least one upper roller, and a clamping position in which the pipe is in contact with the at least one set of lower rollers and the at least one upper roller; (c) the cutting apparatus comprising a grooving member configured to provide an annular groove on an outer surface of the pipe, a cutting member configured to cut off a section of the pipe, and a chamfering member configured to provide a chamfer on the outer surface of the pipe between a location of the annular groove and a location of the cut in the pipe; (d) a drive motor drivingly connected to at least one roller of the at least one set of lower rollers; and, (e) an actuator operatively connected to the drive motor. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the grooving, chamfering, and cutting members are configured to sequentially groove, chamfer, and cut the pipe. 3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the grooving, chamfering, and cutting members are configured to sequentially chamfer, groove, and cut the pipe. 4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the grooving and chamfering members are configured to contemporaneously groove and chamfer the pipe, and the cutting member is configured to subsequently cut the pipe. 5. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the grooving, chamfering, and cutting members are configured to contemporaneously groove, chamfer, and cut the pipe. 6. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the grooving member is configured to provide a rough inner surface of the annular groove. 7. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the chamfering member is configured to provide a chamfer of between 0.5° to 10, preferably between 1° to 5°, and more preferably between 2° to 4°. 8. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the upper frame is repositionable relative to the base between a first orientation in which the grooving member is located closer to a first end of the base than the cutting member, and a second orientation in which the cutting member is located closer to the first end of the base than the grooving member, whereby a first and a second end of the pipe can be grooved, chamfered, and cut without rotating the pipe, relative to the base, about an axis transverse to a longitudinal axis of the pipe. 9. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the grooving member comprises offset first and second grooving members located on either side of the cutting member, and wherein the chamfering member comprises offset first and second chamfering members located on either side of the cutting member such that each offset chamfering member is positioned between a grooving member and the cutting member. 10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the base comprises a support trough that is adapted to receive different sized pipes. 11. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the at least one set of lower rollers comprises a first set of lower rollers configured to receive a pipe having a first diameter and a second set of lower rollers configured to receive a pipe having a second diameter that is larger than the first diameter. 12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the support trough is generally V-shaped with the first set of lower rollers is positioned in a lower portion of the trough and the second set of lower rollers is positioned above the first set of lower rollers. 13. The cutting tool of claim 12 wherein the drive motor is drivingly connected to the at least one set of lower rollers. 14. An apparatus for cutting a pipe, the apparatus comprising: (a) a base comprising a pipe support having at least one set of lower rollers; (b) an upper frame supporting a cutting apparatus and at least one upper roller, the upper frame being moveable relative to the base between an open position in which the pipe may be inserted between the at least one set of lower rollers and the at least one upper roller, and a clamping position in which the pipe is in contact with the at least one set of lower rollers and the at least one upper roller; (c) the cutting apparatus comprising a grooving member configured to provide an annular groove on an outer surface of the pipe, a cutting member configured to cut the pipe, and a chamfering member configured to provide a chamfer on the outer surface of the pipe between a location of the annular groove and a location of the cut in the pipe; (d) a drive motor drivingly connected to at least one roller of the at least one set of lower rollers; and, (e) an actuator operatively connected to the drive motor wherein the upper frame is repositionable relative to the base between a first orientation in which the grooving member is located closer to a first end of the base than the cutting member, and a second orientation in which the cutting member is located closer to the first end of the base than the grooving member, whereby a first and a second end of the pipe can be grooved, chamfered, and cut without rotating the pipe, relative to the base, about an axis transverse to a longitudinal axis of the pipe. 15. An apparatus for cutting a pipe, the apparatus comprising: (a) a base comprising a pipe support having at least one set of lower rollers; (b) an upper frame supporting a cutting apparatus and at least one upper roller, the upper frame being moveable relative to the base between an open position in which the pipe may be inserted between the at least one set of lower rollers and the at least one upper roller, and a clamping position in which the pipe is in contact with the at least one set of lower rollers and the at least one upper roller; (c) the cutting apparatus comprising a grooving member configured to provide an annular groove on an outer surface of the pipe, a cutting member configured to cut the pipe, and a chamfering member configured to provide a chamfer on the outer surface of the pipe between a location of the annular groove and a location of the cut in the pipe; (d) a drive motor drivingly connected to at least one roller of the at least one set of lower rollers; and, (e) an actuator operatively connected to the drive motor wherein the grooving member comprises offset first and second grooving members located on either side of the cutting member, and wherein the chamfering member comprises offset first and second chamfering members located on either side of the cutting member such that each offset chamfering member is positioned between a grooving member and the cutting member.
