Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A device for controlling respiration during sleep based on the user physiological characteristic. The device includes an odor disperser for dispersing an odor; at least one detector for detecting a physiological characteristic of a user; and a controller for controlling respiration of the user by instructing the odor dispenser to disperse an odor responsive to detections by the at least one detector.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of reducing a probability of snoring, the method comprising: providing an odor disperser machine for odor dispersion; selecting an odor having an effect of increasing inhalation volume on a patient smelling the odor; automatically repeatedly dispersing said selected odor by said odor disperser machine towards said selected patient during a sleep period; reducing the probability of snoring of the selected patient by affecting one or more upcoming breaths of said patient consecutive to said dispersing to increase inhalation volume by said repeatedly dispersing odor. 2. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising: monitoring physiological characteristics of the sleeper by a detector during the sleep period. 3. A method according to claim 2 , wherein monitoring physiological characteristics comprises monitoring respiration sounds. 4. A method according to claim 2 , wherein monitoring physiological characteristics comprises monitoring respiration movements. 5. A method according to claim 2 , wherein monitoring physiological characteristics comprises monitoring arousal. 6. A method according to claim 2 , wherein monitoring physiological characteristics comprises monitoring respiratory responses to said dispersing. 7. A method according to claim 2 , wherein at least one dispersion of said repeatedly dispersing an odor is responsive to said monitoring. 8. A method according to claim 2 , further comprising selecting an odor for dispersion responsive to said monitoring. 9. A method according to claim 2 , further comprising selecting a time length of odor dispersion responsive to said monitoring. 10. A method according to claim 1 , wherein reducing the probability of snoring comprises reducing the probability of non-apnea snoring. 11. A method according to claim 1 , wherein reducing the probability of snoring further comprises preventing an apnea event. 12. A method according to claim 1 , wherein reducing the probability of snoring comprises reducing the probability of snoring without inducing arousal. 13. A method according to claim 1 , wherein reducing the probability snoring comprises reducing the probability of snoring without disturbing or interrupting a sleep stage of the sleeper. 14. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said repeatedly dispersing an odor has an olfactory effect on the sleeper. 15. A method according to claim 1 , wherein affecting one or more upcoming breaths of said patient further comprises affecting next exhalation. 16. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising: selecting a patient that snores and generating a treatment protocol for the patient. 17. A device for reducing a probability of snoring during sleep, the device comprising: an odor disperser adapted to disperse an odor; at least one detector adapted to detect a physiological characteristic of a user; a controller configured for reducing the probability of snoring by the user by instructing the odor dispenser to disperse an odor responsive to detections by the at least one detector thereby affecting one or more upcoming breaths of the user consecutive to said odor dispersion to increase inhalation volume. 18. A device according to claim 17 , wherein the controller is further configured for reducing the probability of snoring of the user over a sleep period by repeatedly instructing the odor dispersion to disperse an odor during said sleep period. 19. A device according to claim 17 , wherein at least one detector is a sound detector. 20. A device according to claim 17 , wherein at least one detector is a respiration detector. 21. A device according to claim 17 , wherein the controller is further configured for selecting an odor for dispersion. 22. A device according to claim 17 , wherein the controller is further configured for selecting a dose of odor for dispersion. 23. A device according to claim 17 , wherein the controller is configured to instruct odor dispersion, thereby preventing snoring by the user. 24. A device according to claim 17 , wherein the controller is configured to instruct odor dispersion, thereby preventing an apnea event by the user. 25. A device according to claim 17 , wherein the device can be worn as a nose clip. 26. A device according to claim 17 , wherein the device can be integrated into a bed pillow. 27. A device according to claim 17 , wherein the odors dispersed by the odor disperser control respiration of the user only. 28. A method of controlling a device for reducing a probability of snoring by a user during sleep, the method comprising: determining that reducing the probability of snoring by affecting respiration is desired; providing a device for odor dispersion; selecting a time period of repeated odor dispersion responsive to the affect of one or more upcoming breaths consecutive to odor dispersion that would lead to reduction of probability of snoring required by increasing inhalation volume by the user smelling the odor; and activating the device. 29. A method according to claim 28 , further comprising: selecting an odorant for dispersion. 30. A method according to claim 28 , wherein said selecting is responsive to physiological measurements of a user. 31. A method according to claim 28 , further comprising monitoring odor influence on the user. 32. A method according to claim 31 , wherein said selecting is responsive to the monitored influence.
