Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A patient ventilating (23) and aspirating system (8) is disclosed that has a suction tube (9) and connector (6) for connecting to a catheter mount that has a sealed passageway (15). The catheter mount passageway (15) is sealed with an elastomeric seal (16) including a perforation or slit (17). A connector (12) with a piercing member is associated with the suction tube (9). When the connector is attached to the catheter mount the piercing member (20) pierces the seal (16) such that the suction tube (9) can pass through the connector (6) and catheter mount.

We claim: 1. A catheter mount comprising: at least three passageways; a first of said at least three passageways being adapted to be connected to a patient connector; a second of said at least three passageways being adapted to be connected to a gases transport conduit; a third of said at least three passageways being covered by a seal configured to provide a substantially airtight seal at normal operating pressures such that said catheter mount is sealed from atmosphere in use, said seal located on an outer most terminal edge of said third of said at least three passageways, said seal being adapted to receive an aspirating system and to re-seal when said aspirating system is disconnected from said third of said at least three passageways, said seal being planar and configured to form a planar sealing interface with said aspirating system when connected to said third of said at least three passageways; and said catheter mount being adapted to be fitted in use between said patient connector and said gases transport conduit, said catheter mount adapted to convey pressurized gases from said gases transport conduit to said patient connector and maintain PEEP; wherein said third of said at least three passageways is configured to be releasably connected to said aspirating system with a bayonet fitting. 2. The catheter mount of claim 1 , wherein said seal is made from an elastomeric material. 3. The catheter mount of claim 1 , wherein said seal includes a slit configured to allow the seal to be pierced by a protrusion of said aspirating system. 4. The catheter mount of claim 1 , wherein said catheter mount is substantially T-shaped. 5. A catheter mount comprising: at least three passageways; a first of said at least three passageways being adapted to be connected to a patient connector; a second of said at least three passageways being adapted to be connected to a gases transport conduit; a third of said at least three passageways being covered by a seal configured to provide a substantially airtight seal at normal operating pressures such that said catheter mount is sealed from atmosphere in use, said seal located on an outer most terminal edge of said third of said at least three passageways, said seal being adapted to releasably receive an aspirating system and to re-seal when said aspirating system is releasably disconnected from said third of said at least three passageways, said seal being planar and configured to form a planar sealing interface with said aspirating system when connected to said third of said at least three passageways; and said catheter mount being adapted to be fitted in use between said patient connector and said gases transport conduit, said catheter mount adapted to convey pressurized gases from said gases transport conduit to said patient connector and maintain PEEP. 6. An assembly comprising: the catheter mount of claim 5 ; and a connector configured to releasably couple the aspirating system to said third of said at least three passageways of said catheter mount, said connector comprising two nested cup shaped fittings. 7. The assembly of claim 6 , said connector further comprising a central protrusion extending within said two nested cup shaped fittings, said central protrusion configured to pierce said seal of said catheter mount when said connector is coupled to said third of said at least three passageways of said catheter mount. 8. The assembly of claim 6 , wherein said two nested cup shaped fittings comprise an outer cup-shaped fitting and an inner cup-shaped fitting nested within said outer cup-shaped fitting. 9. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein a rim of said outer cup-shaped fitting extends past a rim of said inner cup-shaped fitting. 10. The assembly of claim 8 , said connector further comprising a central protrusion extending within said two nested cup shaped fittings, said central protrusion configured to pierce said seal of said catheter mount when said connector is coupled to said third of said at least three passageways of said catheter mount. 11. The assembly of claim 10 , said central protrusion extending past a rim of said outer cup-shaped fitting. 12. The catheter mount of claim 3 , wherein said seal is configured to abut and seal against a cup-shaped fitting of the aspirating system surrounding the protrusion when said aspirating system is releasably coupled to said third of said at least three passageways and said protrusion pierces said slit of said seal. 13. The catheter mount of claim 3 , wherein said seal is configured to open in response to said aspirating system being pushed through said seal to form the seal when said seal receives said aspirating system. 14. The assembly of claim 8 , wherein an end of said inner cup-shaped fitting is configured to seal against said seal when said aspirating system is releasably coupled to said catheter mount. 15. A catheter mount comprising: at least three passageways; a first of said at least three passageways being adapted to be connected to a patient connector; a second of said at least three passageways being adapted to be connected to a gases transport conduit; a third of said at least three passageways being covered by a planar seal configured to provide a substantially airtight seal at normal operating pressures such that said catheter mount is sealed from atmosphere in use, said seal located on an outer most terminal edge of said third of said at least three passageways, said seal being adapted to releasably receive an aspirating system and to re-seal when the aspirating system is releasably disconnected from said third of said at least three passageways; wherein an outer surface of said third of said at least three passageways comprises a first part of a releasable lockable fitting configured to engage a second part of the releasable lockable fitting on the aspirating system when the aspirating system is connected to said third of said at least three passageways; said catheter mount being adapted to be fitted in use between said patient connector and said gases transport conduit, said catheter mount adapted to convey pressurized gases from said gases transport conduit to said patient connector and maintain PEEP; wherein said seal defines a first planar sealing interface on a first surface and a second planar sealing interface on a second surface, wherein said first planar sealing interface engages said outer most terminal edge and said second planar sealing interface is configured to engage the aspirating system when the aspirating system is connected to said catheter mount. 16. The catheter mount of claim 15 , wherein said seal is configured to abut against a cup-shaped fitting when said aspirating system is connected to said third of said at least three passageways.
