The present invention relates to a novel phosphate solubilizing strain of Penicillium bilaiae, which is a hybrid of Penicillium bilaiae ATCC 22348 and Penicillium bilaiae V08/021001, as well as compositions and methods for using the novel phosphate solubilizing strain to increase the availability of phosphorous for plant uptake from soil.

The invention claimed is: 1. A composition comprising a soil-compatible carrier and the Penicillium bilaiae strain having the deposit accession number NRRL B-50776. 2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises one or more phosphorous sources. 3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises one or more lipo-chitooligosaccharides and/or chitooligosaccharides. 4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises one or more chitins and/or chitosans. 5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises one or more flavonoids. 6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises one or more diazotrophic microorganisms. 7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises one or more mycorrhizae. 8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises one or more herbicides, fungicides and/or insecticides. 9. A seed treated with the composition of claim 1 . 10. The seed of claim 9 , wherein said seed is coated with 1×10 1 to 1×10 8 colony-forming units of the Penicillium bilaiae strain having the deposit accession number NRRL B-50776. 11. A container comprising a plurality of seeds treated with the composition of claim 1 .
