A load control system for controlling the amount of power delivered from an AC power source to a plurality of electrical load includes a plurality of independent units responsive to a broadcast controller. Each independent unit includes at least one commander and at least one energy controller for controlling at least one of the electrical loads in response to a control signal received from the commander. The independent units are configured and operate independent of each other. The broadcast controller transmits wireless signals to the energy controllers of the independent units. The energy controllers do not respond to control signals received from the commanders of other independent units, but the energy controllers of both independent units respond to the wireless signals transmitted by broadcast controller. The energy controller may operate in different operating modes in response to the wireless signals transmitted by the broadcast controller.

The invention claimed is: 1. A load control system comprising: a plurality of wireless transmitters configured to transmit wireless signals; a plurality of load control devices, each of the plurality of load control devise adapted to control at least one respective electrical load, the plurality of load control devices including a first load control device that is configurable to be responsive to wireless signals transmitted by one or more of the plurality of wireless transmitters by controlling the respective electrical load based on the wireless signals received from the one or more wireless transmitters; and a controller configured to enter an association mode, and while in the association mode: receive a first digital message from the first load control device, the first digital message including a unique identifier of the first load control device; subsequent to receiving the first digital message, receive a second digital message from the first load control device, wherein the first load control device is configured to include in the second digital message a unique identifier of a first one of the plurality of wireless transmitters when the first load control device has been configured to be responsive to wireless signals transmitted by the first one of the wireless transmitters; and associate the first load control device with the controller such that the first load control device is responsive to wireless signals transmitted from the controller to the first load control device. 2. The load control system of claim 1 , wherein a second one of the wireless transmitters is configured to transmit a third digital message including a unique identifier of the second one of the wireless transmitters to the controller in response to an actuation of a button on the second wireless transmitter. 3. The load control system of claim 2 , wherein the controller while in the association mode is further configured to transmit a fourth digital message in response to receiving the third digital message, the fourth digital message including a query for unique identifiers of load control devices that have been configured to be responsive to the second one of the wireless transmitters. 4. The load control system of claim 3 , wherein the first load control device is further configured to transmit the first digital message to the controller in response to receiving the fourth digital message from the controller and determining that the first load control device has been configured to be responsive to the second one of the wireless transmitters. 5. The load control system of claim 4 , wherein the controller, while in the association mode, is further configured to transmit a fifth digital message to the first load control device in response to receiving the first digital message, the fifth digital message including a query for unique identifiers of the wireless transmitters to which the first load control device has been configured to be responsive. 6. The load control system of claim 5 , wherein the first load control device is further configured to transmit the second digital message to the controller in response to receiving the fifth digital message. 7. The load control system of claim 1 , wherein the first load control device is further configured to transmit the first digital message to the controller in response to an actuation of a button on the first load control device. 8. The load control system of claim 7 , wherein the controller, while in the association mode, is further configured to transmit a third digital message to the first load control device in response to receiving the first digital message, the third digital message including a query for unique identifiers of the wireless transmitters to which the first load control device has been configured to be responsive. 9. The load control system of claim 8 , wherein the first load control device is further configured to transmit the second digital message to the controller in response to receiving the third digital message. 10. The load control system of claim 9 , wherein the controller, while in the association mode, is further configured to transmit a fourth digital message in response to receiving the second digital message, the fourth digital message including a query for unique identifiers of load control devices that has been configured to be responsive to the first one of the wireless transmitters. 11. The load control system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of load control devices is configurable to be associated with the controller during a configuration procedure of the load control system. 12. The load control system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the plurality of load control devices is configurable to be associated with at least one of the plurality of wireless transmitters, such that the at least one load control device is responsive to the wireless signals transmitted by the at least one wireless transmitter. 13. The load control system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one load control device is configurable to be associated with the controller at a time after the at least one load control device has been associated with the at least one wireless transmitter. 14. The load control system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of load control devices comprises a dimmer switch adapted to be coupled in series electrical connection between an AC power source and a respective lighting load for controlling an intensity of its respective lighting load. 15. The load control system of claim 14 , wherein at least one of the plurality of wireless transmitters comprises an occupancy sensor, the dimmer switch configured to control the intensity of its respective lighting load to an occupied intensity in response to receiving an occupied command from the occupancy sensor and to a vacant intensity in response to receiving a vacant command from the occupancy sensor. 16. The load control system of claim 15 , wherein the dimmer switch is further configured to adjust minimum and maximum intensities of its respective lighting load in response to digital messages received from the controller. 17. The load control system of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of load control devices is further configured to: operate in different operating modes in response to wireless signals transmitted by the controller; and control its respective electrical load in response to a control signal received from at least one of the plurality of wireless transmitters in different manners depending upon a present operating mode of the respective load control device. 18.
