A system for determining a door condition includes a hinge including a first portion coupled with a door and a second portion coupled with a vehicle frame and rotatably coupled with the first portion. The system further includes a sensor outputting a signal related to a position of the first portion relative to the second portion and a controller receiving the signal and determining whether the signal corresponds to a door closed condition or a door open condition.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for determining a door condition, comprising: a hinge rotatably mounting a door within a corresponding opening within a vehicle frame such that the door is moveable within an angular range between a closed state within the opening and an open state away from the closed state; a latch coupled with the opening opposite the hinge and releasably maintaining the door in the closed state; a sensor outputting a signal related to an angular position of the hinge with a zero position thereof being within the closed state of the door and the angular position increasing with movement of the door away from the closed state in the open state, wherein when the door is in the closed state, the door is capable of being positioned between −0.5 degrees to 0.5 degrees about the zero position; and a controller receiving the signal and determining whether the signal indicates one of the door being in the closed state by the angular position of the hinge being from −0.5 degrees to 0.5 degrees about the zero position or in the open state by the angular position of the hinge being greater than the angular position of the hinge corresponding with the closed state. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is a potentiometer coupled between the door and the vehicle frame; and the signal output by the potentiometer varies proportionately with an increase in an angle between the door and the vehicle frame. 3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the controller determines whether the signal indicates that the door is within the closed state or that the door is in the open state by comparing the signal received from the sensor with known ranges of signal values corresponding to the closed state and the open state, respectively. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is an optical sensor, and the signal includes optical information within a field of view of the optical sensor, and the first of view includes the hinge. 5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the controller determines whether the signal indicates one of the door being in the closed state or in the open state by locating an identifiable feature of the hinge and comparing a position of the identifiable feature to a known position thereof corresponding with the closed state of the door and a range of positions of the identifiable feature corresponding with the open state. 6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is a component of the hinge. 7. The system of claim 1 , further including a power assist device operatively coupled between the door and the frame to drive movement of the door relative to the frame, wherein: the signal is a first signal; the controller outputs a second signal to the power assist device to cause the power assist device to drive movement of the door corresponding to either an opening movement or a closing movement of the door; and the controller monitors the first signal over a predetermined time interval to determine whether the door is moving according to the second signal within the predetermined time interval. 8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the controller further identifies an obstructed condition of the door when: the controller determines that the door is not moving over the predetermined time interval; the door is further determined to be in the open state over the predetermined time interval; and the controller outputs the second signal to the power assist device corresponding to the closing movement of the door over the predetermined time interval. 9. The system of claim 1 , further including a position switch outputting a signal when the door is in the closed state, wherein: the controller, when determining that the door is closed based on the signal from the switch and that the door is in a tolerance range of the closed state based on the signal from the sensor, sets a current position of the hinge to the zero position. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the tolerance range is within about zero degrees and about 5 degrees of an original zero value. 11. A vehicle, comprising: a door opening; a door; a hinge coupled between the door and the opening and permitting an angular movement of the door relative to the opening such that the door is moveable within an angular range between a closed state within the opening and an open state away from of the closed state; a latch coupled with the opening opposite the hinge and releasably maintaining the door in the closed state; a sensor outputting a signal related to an angular relationship between the door and the opening, with a zero position of the hinge being within the closed state of the door and the angular relationship increasing with movement of the door away from the closed state in the open state; and a controller receiving the signal and determining whether the signal indicates one of the door being in the closed state by the angular relationship between the hinge and the door being from zero degrees to 1 degree about the zero position or in the open state by the angular position of the hinge being greater than the angular position of the hinge corresponding with the closed state, wherein when the door is in the closed state, the door is capable of being positioned between −0.5 degrees to 0.5 degrees about the zero position. 12. The vehicle of claim 11 , further including a power assist device operatively coupled between the opening and the door to drive the angular movement of the door relative to the opening, wherein: the controller outputs a signal to the power assist device to cause the power assist device to drive the angular movement of the door between the closed state and the open state. 13. The vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the controller outputs the signal to the power assist device based on a proportional-integral control scheme using the signal from the sensor as an input. 14. The vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the controller monitors the single of the sensor over a predetermined time interval to determine whether the door is moving according to the signal output to the power assist device over the predetermined time interval. 15. The vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the controller further identifies an obstructed condition of the door when: the controller determines that the door is not moving over the predetermined time interval; the door is further determined to be in the open state over the predetermined time interval; and the controller outputs the second signal to the power assist device corresponding to a closing movement of the door over the predetermined time interval. 16. The vehicle of claim 12 , further including a brushless DC motor operatively coupled between the opening and the door to drive the angular movement of the door relative to the opening, wherein: the sensor is derived from the brushless DC motor by monitoring a control circuit thereof. 17. The vehicle of claim 11 , further including a position switch outputting a signal when the door is in the closed state, wherein: the controller, when determining that the door is in the closed state based on both the signal from the switch and the signal from the sensor, sets a current position of the hinge to the zero position. 18. The vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the tolerance range is within about zero degrees and about 5 degrees of an original zero position.
