Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A rail system for a power tool has a base defining a work surface for supporting a workpiece, a support mounted to the base, a number of elongated rails slidably supported by the support for movement relative thereto, a yoke engaged to the number of elongated rails for movement with the elongated rails, and a power tool assembly supported by a yoke for performing an operation on the workpiece. A rail stop is movably mounted to one of the support and the yoke, the rail stop including a stop surface adapted to abut the other of the support and the yoke when the rail stop is in a first position between the yoke and the support. The rail stop is movable to a second position different from the first position.

What is claimed is: 1. A power tool having a base defining a work surface for supporting a workpiece and a power tool assembly supported by a yoke for performing an operation on the workpiece, comprising: a number of elongated rails supporting the yoke; a support mounted to the base and configured to support said number of elongated rails, wherein the yoke and power tool assembly are movable relative to the base and the support; and a rail stop movably mounted to one of the support and the yoke, the rail stop including a base portion movable, with respect to the yoke and the support, parallel to a first plane which is parallel to the number of elongated rails, and the rail stop including a stop surface extending away from the first plane and away from the base portion and adapted to abut the other of the support and the yoke when the rail stop is in a first position with the stop surface at a first location between the yoke and the support, the rail stop movable to a second position in which the stop surface is not at the first location between the yoke and the support, wherein a first side of the base portion defines a second plane parallel to the first plane, a second side of the base portion opposite the first side defines a third plane parallel to the plane, the second plane and the third plane define a base portion path volume therebetween, and the stop surface is configured such that the other of the support and the yoke is abutted by the stop surface at a location spaced apart from the base portion path volume when the stop surface abuts the other of the support and the yoke. 2. The power tool of claim 1 , wherein the base portion includes an elongated plate portion, the rail stop including an end portion extending along the axis perpendicular to said first plane wherein said stop surface is a portion of the end portion. 3. The power tool of claim 2 , wherein said elongated plate portion is pivotably mounted to one of the support and the yoke at an end of said elongated plate portion opposite said end portion. 4. The power tool of claim 3 , wherein said elongated plate portion is pivotably mounted to one of the support and the yoke for pivoting in a vertical plane relative to the base when the power tool assembly is configured to make a 90° cut in a workpiece supported on the work surface. 5. The power tool of claim 3 , wherein said elongated plate portion is pivotably mounted to the support for pivoting in a horizontal plane relative to the base when the power tool assembly is configured to make a 90° cut in a workpiece supported on the work surface. 6. The power tool of claim 2 , wherein said end portion defines a cut-out configured to receive one of said number of elongated rails therein. 7. A power tool having a base defining a work surface for supporting a workpiece, and a power tool assembly supported by a yoke for performing an operation on the workpiece, the power tool further comprising: a number of elongated rails engaged to the yoke; a support mounted to the base and configured to support said number of elongated rails, wherein the yoke and power tool assembly are movable relative to the base and the support; and a rail stop movably mounted to one of the support and the yoke, the rail stop including a planar base portion with a first side and an opposite second side, the planar base portion defines a first plane and is movable with respect to the yoke and the support, and a stop surface supported by the base portion, the rail stop movable between a first position in which the stop surface limits the relative position of the support with respect to the yoke to a first distance and a second position in which the stop surface does not limit the relative position of the support with respect to the yoke to the first distance, wherein a first side of the planar base portion defines a second plane parallel to the first plane, a second side of the planar base portion opposite the first side defines a third plane parallel to the plane, the second plane and the third plane define a planar base portion path volume therebetween, and the stop surface is configured such that the other of the support and the yoke is abutted by the stop surface at a location spaced apart from the planar base portion path volume when the stop surface abuts the other of the support and the yoke. 8. The power tool of claim 7 , wherein: the planar base portion defines a slot along its length, the slot including a notch in at least one end thereof; and the one of the support and the yoke includes a pin projecting therefrom and configured for sliding engagement within the slot, the pin further configured to be disposed within the notch when the rail stop is in the first position. 9. The power tool of claim 8 , wherein: the slot includes a notch at each end thereof; and said pin is configured to be disposed within the notch at one end when the rail stop is in the first position and disposed within the notch at the opposite end of the plate when the rail stop is in the second position. 10. In a power tool having a base defining a work surface for supporting a workpiece, a support mounted to the base, a number of elongated rails, a yoke supported by the number of elongated rails for movement of the yoke relative to the work surface, and a power tool assembly supported by a yoke for performing an operation on the workpiece, the improvement comprising: a rail stop movably mounted to one of the support and the yoke, the rail stop including a stop surface adapted to abut the other of the support and the yoke when the rail stop is in a first position with the stop surface between the yoke and the support, the rail stop movable to a second position different from said first position, wherein the rail stop includes an elongated plate portion movable, with respect to the yoke and the support, between the first position and the second position in a first plane which is substantially parallel to the number of elongated rails, wherein a first side of the elongated plate portion defines a second plane parallel to the first plane, a second side of the elongated plate portion opposite the first side defines a third plane parallel to the plane, the second plane and the third plane define an elongated plate portion path volume therebetween, and the stop surface is configured such that the other of the support and the yoke is abutted by the stop surface at a location spaced apart from the elongated plate portion path volume when the stop surface abuts the other of the support and the yoke. 11. The improvement of claim 10 , wherein the rail stop is movable to a position in which the stop surface is not between the yoke and the support in said second position. 12. The improvement of claim 11 , wherein the rail stop is pivotably mounted to the one of the support and the yoke for pivoting between said first and second positions. 13. The improvement of claim 12 , wherein the rail stop is pivotably mounted to pivot in a vertical plane relative to the base of the power tool when the power tool assembly is configured to make a 90° cut in a workpiece supported on the work surface. 14. The improvement of claim 12 , wherein the rail stop is pivotably mounted to pivot in a horizontal plane relative to the base of the power tool when the power tool assembly is configured to make a 90° cut in a workpiece supported on the work surface. 15. The improvement of claim 10 , wherein the stop surface of said rail stop is at a first distance relative to the one of the support and the yoke in the first position and is at a second distance relative to the one of
