Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A hybrid hemodialysis (“HD”)/peritoneal dialysis (“PD”) system includes: a reservoir; a weigh scale operably coupled with the reservoir; and at least one controller programmed to run (i) an HD treatment in which blood is pumped to a blood compartment of a dialyzer, fresh HD dialysis fluid is pumped to a dialysis fluid compartment of the dialyzer, and used HD dialysis fluid is pumped from the dialysis fluid compartment of the dialyzer to the reservoir, and at a different time (ii) a PD treatment in which fresh PD dialysis fluid is pumped to a patient and used PD dialysis fluid is pumped from the patient to the reservoir.

The invention is claimed as follows: 1. A hybrid hemodialysis (“HD”)/peritoneal dialysis (“PD”) system comprising: a reservoir; a weigh scale operably coupled with the reservoir; at least one controller programmed to run (i) an HD treatment in which blood is pumped to a blood compartment of a dialyzer, fresh HD dialysis fluid is pumped to a dialysis fluid compartment of the dialyzer, and used HD dialysis fluid is pumped from the dialysis fluid compartment of the dialyzer to the reservoir, and at a different time (ii) a PD treatment in which fresh PD dialysis fluid is pumped to a patient and used PD dialysis fluid is pumped from the patient to the reservoir; a dialysis fluid pumping unit fluidly connected to the reservoir; an HD cassette configured for connection to the dialysis fluid pumping unit to run at least the fresh and used HD dialysis fluid portion of (i); and a PD cassette configured for connection to the dialysis fluid pumping unit to run (ii), the PD cassette being interchangeable with the HD cassette for connection to the dialysis fluid pumping unit. 2. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 1 , further comprising a blood cassette configured to run the blood portion of (i). 3. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 2 , further comprising a dialysis fluid pumping apparatus configured to operate with either of the HD and PD cassettes. 4. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 3 , further comprising an additional HD unit configured to run the blood portion of (i). 5. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 1 , wherein a sorbent and/or carbon filled cartridge is located upstream of the reservoir to clean the used HD dialysis fluid being delivered to the reservoir. 6. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 5 , wherein the sorbent and/or carbon filled cartridge is located downstream of the dialysis fluid compartment of the dialyzer in (i). 7. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 1 , wherein the fresh HD dialysis fluid is pumped via a peristaltic pump under control of the at least one controller. 8. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 7 , wherein the fresh HD dialysis fluid and the fresh PD dialysis fluid are pumped at different times via the same peristaltic pump under control of the at least one controller. 9. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 1 , wherein the fresh PD dialysis fluid is pumped via a peristaltic pump under control of the at least one controller. 10. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 1 , wherein blood is pumped via a peristaltic pump under control of the at least one controller. 11. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 1 , wherein used HD and PD dialysis fluids pumped to the reservoir are weighed by the weigh scale in (i) and (ii), respectively, for analysis by the at least one controller. 12. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the fresh HD dialysis fluid or the fresh PD dialysis fluid is weighed by the weigh scale for analysis by the at least one controller. 13. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one of the fresh HD dialysis fluid or fresh PD dialysis fluid is weighed by the weigh scale. 14. A hybrid hemodialysis (“HD”)/peritoneal dialysis (“PD”) system comprising: a reservoir; a weigh scale operably coupled with the reservoir; a sorbent and/or carbon filled cartridge located upstream of the reservoir; at least one controller programmed to run (i) an HD treatment in which blood is pumped to a blood compartment of a dialyzer, fresh HD dialysis fluid is pumped to a dialysis fluid compartment of the dialyzer, and used HD dialysis fluid is pumped from the dialysis fluid compartment of the dialyzer, through the sorbent and/or carbon filled cartridge, to the reservoir, and at a different time (ii) a PD treatment in which fresh PD dialysis fluid is pumped to a patient and used PD dialysis fluid is pumped from the patient to the reservoir; a dialysis fluid pumping unit fluidly connected to the reservoir; an HD cassette configured for connection to the dialysis fluid pumping unit to run at least the fresh and used HD dialysis fluid portion of (i); and a PD cassette configured for connection to the dialysis fluid pumping unit to run (ii), the PD cassette being interchangeable with the HD cassette for connection to the dialysis fluid pumping unit. 15. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 14 , wherein in (ii) the used PD dialysis fluid is pumped from the patient, through the sorbent and/or carbon filled cartridge, to the reservoir. 16. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 14 , wherein the sorbent and/or carbon filled cartridge is configured for a single one of the HD treatments. 17. The hybrid HD/PD system of claim 14 , wherein the sorbent and/or carbon filled cartridge is configured for multiple ones of the HD treatments. 18. A hybrid hemodialysis (“HD”)/peritoneal dialysis (“PD”) system comprising: a reservoir; at least one controller programmed to run (i) an HD treatment in which blood is pumped to a blood compartment of a dialyzer, fresh HD dialysis fluid is pumped to a dialysis fluid compartment of the dialyzer, and used HD dialysis fluid is pumped from the dialysis fluid compartment of the dialyzer to the reservoir, and at a different time (ii) a PD treatment in which fresh PD dialysis fluid is pumped to a patient and used PD dialysis fluid is pumped from the patient to the reservoir; a pumping unit fluidly connected to the reservoir; an HD cassette configured for connection to the pumping unit to run at least the fresh and used HD dialysis fluid portion of (i); and a PD cassette configured for connection to the pumping unit to run (ii), the PD cassette being interchangeable with the HD cassette for connection to the pumping unit. 19.
