Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A syringe includes a body and a plunger movably disposed within the body. The syringe may be used with an injector including a drive member. The drive member preferably includes at least one pin adapted to form a retractable abutting connection with an interior of a plunger to enable the drive member to retract the plunger with the body of the syringe.

What is claimed is: 1. A syringe comprising: a syringe body; and a plunger movably disposed within the syringe body and configured to engage a piston of a fluid injector for moving the plunger within the syringe body, the plunger comprising: an annular base member comprising a cylindrical wall extending in a longitudinal direction, wherein the cylindrical wall comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and an inner surface between the proximal end and the distal end; a retaining shoulder projecting inwardly from and extending around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall; and a plurality of flanges proximal to the retaining shoulder and projecting inwardly from the inner surface of the cylindrical wall. 2. The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of flanges are radially spaced apart around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall. 3. The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of flanges are evenly spaced apart around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall. 4. The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of flanges are randomly spaced apart around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall. 5. The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of flanges extend inwardly to decrease a diameter of the cylindrical wall defined by the inner surface. 6. The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of flanges are configured to engage an abutment section of the piston. 7. The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the retaining shoulder is configured to engage one or more radially retractable pins on an abutment section of the piston. 8. The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the plunger further comprises a seal having a seal outer surface adapted to slidingly engage with an inner surface of the syringe body and a seal inner surface adapted to engage the plunger. 9. The syringe of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of flanges are configured to engage an abutment section of the piston distally from a circumferential ledge at the proximal end of the cylindrical wall. 10. A plunger configured for being movably disposed within a body of a syringe, the plunger comprising: an annular base member comprising a cylindrical wall extending in a longitudinal direction, wherein the cylindrical wall comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and an inner surface between the proximal end and the distal end; a retaining shoulder projecting inwardly from and extending around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall; and a plurality of flanges proximal to the retaining shoulder and projecting inwardly from the inner surface of the cylindrical wall, wherein the plunger is configured to engage a piston of a fluid injector for moving the plunger within the syringe body. 11. The plunger of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of flanges are evenly spaced apart around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall. 12. The plunger of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of flanges extend inwardly to decrease a diameter formed by the inner surface of the cylindrical wall. 13. The plunger of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of flanges are configured to engage an abutment section of the piston. 14. The plunger of claim 10 , wherein the retaining shoulder is configured to engage one or more radially retractable pins on an abutment section of the piston. 15. The plunger of claim 10 , further comprising a seal having a seal outer surface adapted to slidingly engage with an inner surface of the syringe body and a seal inner surface adapted to engage the plunger. 16. A syringe comprising: a syringe body; and a plunger movably disposed within the syringe body, the plunger comprising: an annular base member comprising a cylindrical wall extending in a longitudinal direction, wherein the cylindrical wall comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and an inner surface between the proximal end and the distal end; a retaining shoulder projecting inwardly from and extending around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall; and a plurality of flanges proximal to the retaining shoulder and projecting inwardly from the inner surface of the cylindrical wall, wherein the retaining shoulder is configured to engage one or more radially retractable pins on an abutment section of a piston configured for moving the plunger within the syringe body. 17. The syringe of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of flanges are radially spaced apart around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall. 18. The syringe of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of flanges are evenly spaced apart around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall. 19. The syringe of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of flanges are randomly spaced apart around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall. 20. The syringe of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of flanges extend inwardly to decrease a diameter of the cylindrical wall defined by the inner surface. 21. The syringe of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of flanges are configured to engage one or more outwardly extending flange members on the piston configured for moving the plunger within the syringe body. 22. The syringe of claim 16 , wherein the plunger further comprises a seal having a seal outer surface adapted to slidingly engage with an inner surface of the syringe body and a seal inner surface adapted to engage the plunger. 23. The syringe of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of flanges are configured to engage the abutment section of the piston distally from a circumferential ledge at the proximal end of the cylindrical wall. 24. A plunger configured for being movably disposed within a body of a syringe, the plunger comprising: an annular base member comprising a cylindrical wall extending in a longitudinal direction, wherein the cylindrical wall comprises a proximal end, a distal end, and an inner surface between the proximal end and the distal end; a retaining shoulder projecting inwardly from and extending around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall; and a plurality of flanges proximal to the retaining shoulder and projecting inwardly from the inner surface of the cylindrical wall, wherein the retaining shoulder is configured to engage one or more radially retractable pins on an abutment section of a piston configured for moving the plunger within the syringe body. 25. The plunger of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of flanges are evenly spaced apart around the inner surface of the cylindrical wall. 26. The plunger of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of flanges extend inwardly to decrease a diameter formed by the inner surface. 27. The plunger of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of flanges are configured to engage the abutment section of the piston configured for moving the plunger within the syringe body. 28.
