Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An implant includes an anterior plate defining a first end of the implant and a posterior plate defining a second end of the implant opposite the first end of the implant. The implant also includes a central support portion extending between the anterior plate and the posterior plate. The implant further includes a side wall extending between the anterior plate and the posterior plate and defining a portion of the outside perimeter of the implant; a first exterior arced member disposed proximate the side wall and the posterior plate; and a first interior arced member is disposed proximate the central support member and the posterior plate. The exterior arced member and the interior arced member curve in a superior direction such that portions of the exterior and interior arced members form portions of a bone contacting superior surface of the implant.

We claim: 1. An implant comprising: an anterior plate forming a first monolithic structure defining a first end of the implant; a posterior plate forming a second monolithic structure defining a second end of the implant opposite the first end of the implant; a central support portion extending between the anterior plate and the posterior plate; a side wall extending between the anterior plate and the posterior plate and defining a portion of the outside perimeter of the implant; a first exterior arced member disposed proximate the side wall and the posterior plate; and a first interior arced member is disposed proximate the central support member and the posterior plate; wherein the first exterior arced member curves in a superior direction such that a portion of the first exterior arced member forms a portion of a bone contacting superior surface of the implant; and wherein the first interior arced member curves in a superior direction such that a portion of the first interior arced member forms a portion of the bone contacting superior surface of the implant. 2. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first interior arced member and the first exterior arced member intersect with each other at a first intersection region between the central support portion and the side wall of the implant. 3. The implant of claim 2 , further including: a second exterior arced member disposed proximate the side wall; and a second interior arced member disposed proximate the central support member; wherein the second exterior arced member curves in a superior direction such that a portion of the second exterior arced member forms a portion of a bone contacting superior surface of the implant; wherein the second interior arced member curves in a superior direction such that a portion of the second interior arced member forms a portion of the bone contacting superior surface of the implant; wherein the second interior arced member and the second exterior arced member intersect with each other at a second intersection region between the central support portion and the side wall of the implant; and wherein the implant includes a plurality of intersection regions between arced members, including the first intersection region and the second intersection region, and wherein the plurality of intersection regions are spaced at regular intervals. 4. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the implant is symmetric about at least one of a transverse plane and a median plane. 5. The implant of claim 4 , wherein the implant comprises at least two levels, wherein when the implant is divided about the transverse plane, at least a first level is located in the superior half and at least a second level is located in the inferior half, and wherein each level comprises at least two exterior arced members and at least two interior arced members. 6. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the first exterior arced member is connected to the posterior plate. 7. The implant of claim 6 , wherein the first interior arced member and the first exterior arced member intersect with each other at a first intersection region proximate the posterior plate. 8. The implant of claim 1 , wherein first exterior arced member has a substantially circular cross-sectional shape; wherein the first interior arced member has a substantially circular cross-sectional shape; wherein the portion of the first exterior arced member forming a portion of the bone contacting superior surface of the implant is a flattened surface; and wherein the portion of the first interior arced member forming a portion of the bone contacting superior surface of the implant is a flattened surface. 9. An implant comprising: an first plate forming a first monolithic structure defining a first end of the implant; a second plate forming a second monolithic structure defining a second end of the implant opposite the first end of the implant; a central support portion extending between the first plate and the second plate; a side wall extending between the first plate and the second plate and defining a portion of the outside perimeter of the implant; a first exterior arced member disposed proximate the side wall and the second plate; and a first interior arced member disposed proximate the central support member and the second plate; wherein the first exterior arced member curves in a first direction such that a portion of the first exterior arced member forms a portion of a bone contacting surface of the implant; and wherein the first interior arced member curves in the first direction such that a portion of the first interior arced member forms a portion of the bone contacting surface of the implant. 10. The implant of claim 9 , wherein the first interior arced member and the first exterior arced member intersect with each other at a first intersection region between the central support portion and the side wall of the implant. 11. The implant of claim 10 , further including: a second exterior arced member disposed proximate the side wall; and a second interior arced member disposed proximate the central support member; wherein the second exterior arced member curves in the first direction such that a portion of the second exterior arced member forms a portion of the bone contacting surface of the implant; wherein the second interior arced member curves in the first direction such that a portion of the second interior arced member forms a portion of the bone contacting surface of the implant; wherein the second interior arced member and the second exterior arced member intersect with each other at a second intersection region between the central support portion and the side wall of the implant; and wherein the implant includes a plurality of intersection regions between arced members, including the first intersection region and the second intersection region, and wherein the plurality of intersection regions are spaced at regular intervals. 12. The implant of claim 9 , wherein the implant is symmetric about at least one of a transverse plane and a median plane. 13. The implant of claim 12 , wherein the implant comprises at least two levels, wherein when the implant is divided about the transverse plane, at least a first level is located in the superior half and at least a second level is located in the inferior half, and wherein each level comprises at least two exterior arced members and at least two interior arced members. 14. The implant of claim 9 , wherein the first exterior arced member is connected to the second plate. 15. The implant of claim 14 , wherein the first interior arced member and the first exterior arced member intersect with each other at a first intersection region proximate the second plate. 16.
