Official abstract text for this publication.
An insulation structure for an appliance includes a cabinet having an outer wrapper and an inner liner, with an insulating cavity defined therebetween. A plurality of hollow insulating organic/inorganic spheres is disposed within the insulating cavity, wherein a secondary insulating volume is defined between the plurality of hollow insulating organic/inorganic spheres and an interior surface of the cabinet. The interior surface of the cabinet defines the insulating cavity. An insulating fill material is disposed within the secondary insulating volume, wherein the insulating fill material and the plurality of hollow insulating organic/inorganic spheres define a substantially uniform insulating material.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of forming a thermal insulating structure for a refrigerating appliance, the method comprising steps of: forming an insulating member, wherein the insulating member includes an interior surface that defines an interior insulating cavity; forming a plurality of hollow insulating spheres; forming a fill material, wherein the fill material is at least partially defined by a nano/micro-sized particulate material; disposing the hollow insulating spheres and the nano/micro-sized particulate material within the interior insulating cavity; and dispersing the nano/micro-sized particulate material throughout a secondary insulating volume defined within the interior insulating cavity and within an interstitial space defined between the plurality of hollow insulating spheres, wherein the nano/micro-sized particulate material and the hollow insulating spheres at least partially define a substantially uniform insulating material, wherein the step of dispersing the nano/micro-sized particulate material throughout the secondary insulating volume is performed by contemporaneously injecting an insulating gas carrier and the nano/micro-sized particulate material into the interior insulating cavity, and wherein the insulating gas carrier contains at least a portion of the nano/micro-sized particulate material in a suspended state therein and deposits the nano/micro-sized particulate material in a precipitated state throughout the secondary insulating volume, and wherein the insulating gas carrier is an insulating gas having thermal properties different than thermal properties of air, and wherein the precipitated state of the nano/micro-sized particulate material is at least partially produced by the hollow insulating spheres and by structures defined within the interior surface of the insulating member. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of dispersing the nano/micro-sized particulate material is at least partially performed by a vibrating mechanism in communication with the interior insulating cavity. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the insulating gas carrier includes at least one of neon, carbon dioxide, xenon and krypton. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising steps of: sealing the insulating member with the substantially uniform insulating material therein; and expressing gas contained within the insulating member to define a vacuum insulating structure with the substantially uniform insulating material disposed therein. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nano/micro-sized particulate material includes at least one of fumed silica, precipitated silica, nano/micro aerogel powder, rice husk ash powder, pearlite, cenospheres and diatomaceous earth. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hollow insulating spheres and the nano/micro-sized particulate material are contemporaneously disposed into the interior insulating cavity. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the hollow insulating spheres and the nano/micro-sized particulate material define a pre-mixed insulating material that is combined before deposition into the interior insulating cavity. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of disposing the hollow insulating spheres and the nano/micro-sized particulate material within the interior insulating cavity is performed by first depositing the hollow insulating spheres into the interior insulating cavity and subsequently depositing the nano/micro-sized particulate material into the interior insulating cavity.
