Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Electronic display systems, including roadside display devices, vehicle-based devices, personal mobile devices, intermediary servers, advertising servers and/or networks, and/or additional external data sources may operate individually or in combination to identify one or more vehicle locations, driving routes, driver and passenger characteristics, driving behavior and patterns, telematics data, and the like. Vehicle and individual characteristics and/or telematics data may be determined based on data received from traffic cameras, vehicle-based devices, personal mobile devices, telematics devices, and/or other data sources, including software applications. Based on the vehicle characteristics, individual characteristics, driving data and driving patterns, telematics data, and the like, content, such as digital display content or audio content, may be determined for output on various devices, such as electronic roadside displays to be viewable by the approaching vehicles, and/or other devices to be accessible by associated individuals via the other devices. Various techniques may be used to determine customized content. Additionally, certain systems may be interactive to allow user responses and follow-up content via on-board vehicle devices or other user devices.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: determining, by a first computing device having at least one processor and for each of a plurality of users, a second computing device associated with the user and executing a predetermined application; sending, to each of the second computing devices and via a communication interface, instructions for the predetermined application to: determine another application, operating on the second computing device and configured to collect driving data, wherein the other application is different from the predetermined application, and wherein the other application for a first user, of the plurality of users, is different from the other application of a second user, of the plurality of users; and send, to the first computing device, the driving data collected by the other application and information identifying the other application; receiving, by the at least one processor and via the communication interface and from each of the second computing devices, the driving data; receiving, by the at least one processor and via the communication interface, one or more bids to provide content to one or more users, of the plurality of users, having driving data corresponding to one or more predetermined characteristics; acquiring, by the at least one processor, content associated with a first bid selected from the one or more bids; determining, by the at least one processor, the one or more users having the driving data corresponding to the one or more predetermined characteristics; and sending, by the at least one processor and to the second computing device associated with each of the determined one or more users: the content; and instructions for the predetermined application to cause, based on the information identifying the other application that collected the driving data, the content to be output via the other application. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising calculating, by the at least one processor and based on an analysis of the driving data, a driving score associated with each of the plurality of users. 3. The method of claim 2 , wherein receiving the one or more bids comprises receiving, by the at least one processor and from an advertising server, one or more bids to provide content to one or more users having the driving score between a first score and a second score, and wherein determining the one or more users comprises determining, by the at least one processor, one or more users having the driving score between the first score and the second score. 4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising: grouping, by the at least one processor, the plurality of users into a plurality of different groups based on the driving score associated with each of the plurality of users; and providing, by the at least one processor and to an advertising server, data identifying the plurality of different groups, wherein receiving the one or more bids comprises receiving, by the at least one processor, from the advertising server, and via the communication interface, one or more bids to provide content to one or more users grouped in a first group of the plurality of different groups, and wherein determining the one or more users comprises determining, by the at least one processor, one or more users grouped in the first group. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the driving data is collected from one or more sensors of the second computing device. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more bids comprises the one or more predetermined characteristics, a bid amount, and a content. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the first bid is selected based on at least one of the bid amount, a content output frequency, and a content yield. 8. A first computing device comprising: one or more processors; a communication interface; and at least one memory storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the first computing device to: determine, for each of a plurality of users, a second computing device associated with the user and executing a predetermined application; send, to each of the second computing devices and via the communication interface, instructions for the predetermined application to: determine another application, operating on the second computing device and configured to collect driving data, wherein the other application is different from the predetermined application, and wherein the other application for a first user, of the plurality of users, is different from the other application of a second user, of the plurality of user; and send, to the first computing device, the driving data collected by the other application and information identifying the other application; receive, via the communication interface and from each of the second computing devices, the driving data; receive, via the communication interface, one or more bids to provide content to one or more users, of the plurality of users, having driving data corresponding to one or more predetermined characteristics; acquire content associated with a first bid selected from the one or more bids; determine the one or more users having the driving data corresponding to the one or more predetermined characteristics; and send to a second computing device associated with each of the determined one or more users: the content; and instructions for the predetermined application to cause, based on the information identifying the other application that collected the driving data, the other application to output the content. 9. The first computing device of claim 8 , wherein the computer-readable instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the first computing device to calculate, based on an analysis of the driving data, a driving score associated with each of the plurality of users. 10. The first computing device of claim 9 , wherein receiving the one or more bids comprises receiving, from an advertising server and via the communication interface, one or more bids to provide content to one or more users having the driving score between a first score and a second score, and wherein determining the one or more users comprises determining one or more users having the driving score between the first score and the second score. 11. The first computing device of claim 9 , wherein the computer-readable instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the first computing device to: group the plurality of users into a plurality of different groups based on the driving score associated with each of the plurality of users; and provide, to an advertising server, data identifying the plurality of different groups, wherein receiving the one or more bids comprises receiving, from the advertising server and via the communication interface, one or more bids to provide content to one or more users grouped in a first group of the plurality of different groups, and wherein determining the one or more users comprises determining one or more users grouped in the first group. 12. The first computing device of claim 8 , wherein the driving data is collected from one or more sensors of the second computing device. 13. The first computing device of claim 8 , wherein each of the one or more bids comprises the one or more predetermined characteristics, a bid amount, and a content. 14. The first computing device of claim 13 , wherein the first bid is selected based on at least one of the bid amount, a content output frequency, and a content yield. 15. A system comprising: one or more serve
