Official abstract text for this publication.
At least one unique collection of storage artifacts can be specified to indicate that the storage artifact is a member of the unique collection. Each storage artifact can be a discrete object comprising digitally encoded content that is stored as a node within a tree structure of a tangible storage medium. The collection can be referenced by a set of different storage artifacts to form a collection of related storage artifacts. Each storage artifact can correspond to different collections, wherein membership within a collection is independent of a storage path within the tree structure. A file management action relating to the storage artifact can be performed. The file management action can be dependent upon the storage artifact being a member of the unique collection.

What is claimed is: 1. A computer-implemented method, comprising: storing, into a node of a tree structured repository, a storage artifact; associating, using metadata within the storage artifact, the storage artifact with a first collection of related heterogeneous artifacts; associating, using the metadata within the storage artifact, the storage artifact with a second collection of related heterogeneous artifacts; receiving a request for a file management action; identifying, based upon the request and using the metadata, a set of a plurality of storage artifacts related to the request; and performing, for each storage artifact within the set of the plurality of storage artifacts; the file management action. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the file management action is one of a delete action, a copy action, or a move action. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metadata includes a first collection ID of the first collection a second collection ID of the second collection. 4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving a search request having a collection-specific criteria; and searching the collections using the collection-specific criteria. 5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving a search request having an artifact-specific criteria; and searching the collections using the artifact-specific criteria. 6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving a search request having a collection specific criteria and an artifact-specific criteria; first searching the collections using the collection specific criteria to produce a first result; and second searching the first result using the artifact-specific criteria. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first collection of related heterogeneous artifacts includes artifacts stored in different databases using different file types. 8. A computer hardware system, comprising: a computer hardware processor configured to initiate the following operations: storing, into a node of a tree structured repository, a storage artifact; associating, using metadata within the storage artifact, the storage artifact with a first collection of related heterogeneous artifacts; associating, using the metadata within the storage artifact, the storage artifact with a second collection of related heterogeneous artifacts; receiving a request for a file management action; identifying, based upon the request and using the metadata, a set of a plurality of storage artifacts related to the request; and performing, for each storage artifact within the set of the plurality of storage artifacts; the file management action. 9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the file management action is one of a delete action, a copy action, or a move action. 10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the metadata includes a first collection ID of the first collection a second collection ID of the second collection. 11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the computer hardware processor is further configured to initiate the following operations: receiving a search request having a collection-specific criteria; and searching the collections using the collection-specific criteria. 12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the computer hardware processor is further configured to initiate the following operations: receiving a search request having an artifact-specific criteria; and searching the collections using the artifact-specific criteria. 13. The system of claim 8 , wherein the computer hardware processor is further configured to initiate the following operations: receiving a search request having a collection specific criteria and an artifact-specific criteria; first searching the collections using the collection specific criteria to produce a first result; and second searching the first result using the artifact-specific criteria. 14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first collection of related heterogeneous artifacts includes artifacts stored in different databases using different file types. 15. A computer program product, comprising: a computer hardware storage device having stored therein computer-usable program code, the computer-usable program code, which when executed by a computer hardware system, causes the computer hardware system to perform: storing, into a node of a tree structured repository, a storage artifact; associating, using metadata within the storage artifact, the storage artifact with a first collection of related heterogeneous artifacts; associating, using the metadata within the storage artifact, the storage artifact with a second collection of related heterogeneous artifacts; receiving a request for a file management action; identifying, based upon the request and using the metadata, a set of a plurality of storage artifacts related to the request; and performing, for each storage artifact within the set of the plurality of storage artifacts; the file management action. 16. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the file management action is one of a delete action, a copy action, or a move action. 17. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the metadata includes a first collection ID of the first collection a second collection ID of the second collection. 18. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the computer-usable program code further causes the computer hardware system to perform: receiving a search request having a collection-specific criteria; and searching the collections using the collection-specific criteria. 19. The computer program product of claim 15 wherein the computer-usable program code further causes the computer hardware system to perform: receiving a search request having an artifact-specific criteria; and searching the collections using the artifact-specific criteria. 20. The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the computer-usable program code further causes the computer hardware system to perform: receiving a search request having a collection specific criteria and an artifact-specific criteria; first searching the collections using the collection specific criteria to produce a first result; and second searching the first result using the artifact-specific criteria.
