Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An implantable electrode paddle is adapted to receive an electrical signal from a medical device and generate an electrical field to stimulate selected body tissue. The paddle includes a housing including walls that define an interior space and a plurality of windows formed through at least a first one of the walls for transmitting the electrical field to the body tissue, an electrode array including a plurality of electrode groups, each electrode group including at least two electrodes individually secured in a respective window and spaced between about 0.1 mm and about 10 mm apart, and a plurality of wires, each of the wires being coupled to a respective electrode and routed within the interior space to receive the electrical signal. A lead assembly and an implantable medical device can include the paddle.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of steering an electrical field from an implantable electrode paddle configured to receive an electrical signal from a medical device to stimulate selected body tissue, the method comprising the step of: providing the implantable electrode paddle that comprises a set of electrodes, a first insulative substrate, the electrodes of the set being attached to the insulative substrate so as to form an electrode array including a plurality of electrode groups, a plurality of wires coupled to the electrode array, the first insulative substrate having a plurality of windows formed therethrough for transmitting the electrical field to the body tissue, each electrode of the electrode array being secured in a respective window with the electrodes in each group spaced between about 0.1 mm and about 10 mm apart, the first insulative substrate providing a first exterior surface in a first plane, the first surface facing a first direction, the windows being formed in the first surface, the first insulative substrate providing a second exterior surface in a second plane that is parallel but offset from the first plane, the second surface facing the first direction, the second surface residing between a first group of the plurality of electrode groups and a second group of the plurality of electrode groups; and providing the electrical signal to a chosen one or more electrodes of the set of electrodes to steer the electrical field to a target location of the body tissue. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the implantable electrode paddle further comprises a second substrate sealed to the first substrate with the electrodes and wires sandwiched between the first and second substrates. 3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the first and second substrates encapsulate the electrodes and wires with a fluid-impermeable seal. 4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the implantable electrode paddle further comprises an insulative boot having a receiving slot with the first and second substrates being positioned within the receiving slot and with the electrodes exposed to the boot exterior. 5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein each of the electrodes is adhered to a respective window using an adhesive. 6. A method of steering an electrical field from an implantable electrode paddle configured to receive an electrical signal from a medical device to stimulate selected body tissue, the method comprising the step of: providing the implantable electrode paddle comprising an electrode array including a plurality of electrode groups with a plurality of wires coupled to the electrode array, a first insulative substrate having a plurality of windows formed therethrough for transmitting the electrical field to the body tissue, each electrode being secured in a respective window with the electrodes in each group laterally spaced between about 0.1 mm and about 10 mm apart where a lateral spacing from closest edge to closest edge between two immediately adjacent electrodes of a first electrode group of the plurality is the same as the lateral spacing from closest edge to closest edge between two immediately adjacent electrodes of a second electrode group of the plurality that is longitudinally spaced from the first electrode group where electrodes of the first group that are closest to the second group are spaced from the electrodes of the second group that are closest to the first group by an amount larger than the lateral spacing; and providing the electrical signal to a chosen one or more electrodes of the set of electrodes to steer the electrical field to a target location of the body tissue. 7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the implantable electrode paddle further comprises a second substrate sealed to the first substrate with the electrodes and wires sandwiched between the first and second substrates. 8. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the first and second substrates encapsulate the electrodes and wires with a fluid-impermeable seal. 9. The method according to claim 7 , wherein the implantable electrode paddle further comprises an insulative boot having a receiving slot with the first and second substrates positioned within the slot and with the electrodes exposed to the boot exterior. 10. The method according to claim 6 , wherein each of the electrodes is adhered to a respective window using an adhesive. 11. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the electrode array comprises a metal deposited onto the first substrate and etched to form the electrodes.
