Disclosed herein are compositions and methods for treating or preventing certain cancers in a subject. In certain embodiments such compositions and methods generally relate to the use of G-coupled protein receptor 40 (GPR40) agonists to inhibit the growth or induce apoptosis of certain cancer cells. The compositions and related methods disclosed herein may be used to treat subjects affected by cancers, such as melanoma, medullary thyroid carcinoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors and neuroblastoma, and to reduce the incidence of metastases in such affected subjects.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of treating cancer in a subject affected by cancer, wherein the method comprises administering a composition to the subject and thereby treating the cancer, wherein the composition comprises an effective amount of a G-protein coupled receptor 40 (GPR40) agonist; wherein the GPR40 agonist is or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; and wherein the cancer is a neuroblastoma. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises administering an effective amount of one or more chemotherapeutic agents to the subject. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is a mammal. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is a human. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is administered orally, subcutaneously, topically, or intravenously to the subject.
