Systems, methods, and apparatuses are described for accelerating projectiles at high velocity. A barrel may include one or more heaters configured to heat a bore of the barrel prior to launch of a projectile. The barrel bore may be formed in a tungsten sleeve and may be heated to high temperatures. Heat from the barrel bore may be transferred to expanding propellant behind a projectile as it travels through the barrel bore.

The invention claimed is: 1. An apparatus comprising: a barrel comprising a bore extending from a barrel entrance to a barrel exit and further comprising a heater configured to heat at least a surface of the bore; a breach chamber positioned behind the barrel entrance; a compression chamber sealable to contain gas pressurized to at least a predefined value; a barrier sealing a connection between the compression chamber and the breach chamber and configured to open upon pressure within the compression chamber reaching the predefined value; a gas valve openable to allow delivery of gas into the compression chamber and closable to prevent release, via the valve, of gas in the compression chamber. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: a source of a light gas, comprising one or more of hydrogen and helium, connected to the gas valve. 3. The apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising a recovery manifold, and wherein the source of the light gas includes a pump having an inlet in fluid communication with the recovery manifold. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: a piston movable within the compression chamber to reduce a volume of the compression chamber; and an expansion chamber separated from the compression chamber by the piston. 5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the barrier comprises a shear plate, and further comprising a projectile located in the breach chamber between the shear plate and the barrel entrance, wherein the projectile is sized to pass through the barrel. 6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a shutter located forward of the barrel exit having an open configuration exposing the bore and a closed configuration preventing passage of gas into or out of the bore. 7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the heater comprises an electrical heater. 8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the heater comprises a plurality of individually-controllable heaters distributed along at least a portion of a length of the barrel. 9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising projectile, formed from compressed dust, in the breach chamber. 10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the barrel comprises a tungsten sleeve. 11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: a piston movable within the compression chamber to reduce a volume of the compression chamber; and an electrically-powered linear actuator positioned to drive the piston into the compression chamber. 12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the electrically-powered linear actuator comprises a railgun. 13. An apparatus comprising: a barrel comprising tungsten, the barrel comprising a bore extending from a barrel entrance to a barrel exit and further comprising a heater configured to heat at least a surface of the bore; a breach chamber positioned behind the barrel entrance; a compression chamber sealable to contain gas pressurized to at least a predefined value; and a barrier sealing a connection between the compression chamber and the breach chamber and configured to open upon pressure with the compression chamber reaching the predefined value. 14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the heater comprises a plurality individually controllable heaters distributed along at least a portion of a length of the barrel. 15. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising: a source of a light gas, comprising one or more of hydrogen and helium, connected to the compression chamber; and a recovery manifold, located at the barrel exit, in fluid communication with the source of the light gas. 16. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising: a piston movable within the compression chamber to reduce a volume of the compression chamber; and an expansion chamber separated from the compression chamber by the piston. 17. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising: a piston movable within the compression chamber to reduce a volume of the compression chamber; and an electrically-powered linear actuator positioned to drive the piston into the compression chamber. 18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the electrically-powered linear actuator comprises a railgun. 19. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising a projectile located in the breach chamber between the barrier and the barrel entrance, wherein the projectile is sized to pass through the barrel. 20. The apparatus of claim 13 , further comprising a shutter located forward of the barrel exit having an open configuration exposing the bore and a closed configuration preventing passage of gas into or out of the bore.
