The invention claimed is: 1. A polymer comprising a sub-unit comprising a Troger's base moiety represented by Formula I: wherein L comprises an arylene group including at least one functional group selected from at least one of: hydroxyl, phosphonic acid, carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid and their corresponding salt or ester; alkynyl, alkynyl ether, cyanate, epoxy and glycidyl ether; and wherein the sub-unit is represented by least one of the following formulae along with their corresponding regioisomers: wherein: X and Y, and X′ and Y′ are independently selected from: phosphonic acid, carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid and their corresponding salt or ester; alkynyl, alkynyl ether, cyanate, hydroxyl and hydrogen; and R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , and R 4 are independently selected from alkyl groups comprising from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and R 1 and R 2 may collectively form a ketone group or a 9,9′-fluorene group, and R 3 and R 4 may collectively form a ketone group or a 9,9′-fluorene group. 2. The polymer of claim 1 wherein Formulae IIa, IIb, III, IVa, IVb and IVc represents a repeating unit of the polymer. 3. The polymer of claim 1 wherein two or more different repeat units are incorporated in the form of a copolymer. 4. The polymer of claim 1 wherein one or more substituents X, X′, Y′ and Y′ are hydroxyl and at least one or more of the substituents X, X′, Y and Y′ are hydrogen, and the polymer is covalently crosslinked through diazo-linkages. 5. The polymer of claim 3 wherein one or more substituents X, X′, Y′ and Y′ are hydroxyl and at least one or more of the substituents X, X′, Y and Y′ are hydrogen, and the polymer is covalently crosslinked through diazo-linkages. 6. The polymer of claim 1 wherein the polymer is covalently crosslinked through at least one of X, X′, Y and Y′.
