Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A video display system for a vehicle includes a video display device disposed in the vehicle so as to be viewable by a driver of the vehicle. A camera is disposed at the vehicle and having an exterior field of view and operable to capture image data. The field of view of the camera encompasses a blind spot of the vehicle. A control includes a data processor. The control, responsive at least in part to processing by the data processor of data captured by at least one sensor of the vehicle, detects an object present exterior of the vehicle that is in the field of view of the camera. Responsive to detection of the object present exterior of the vehicle, the control controls the video display device to episodically and automatically display video images of the object that are derived from image data captured by the camera.

The invention claimed is: 1. A video display system for a vehicle, said video display system comprising: a video display device disposed in a vehicle equipped with said video display system so as to be viewable by a driver of the equipped vehicle; a camera disposed at the equipped vehicle and having an exterior field of view and operable to capture image data; wherein the field of view of said camera encompasses a blind spot of the equipped vehicle; a control comprising a data processor; wherein said control, responsive at least in part to processing by said data processor of data captured by at least one sensor of the equipped vehicle, detects an object present exterior of the equipped vehicle that is in the field of view of said camera; and wherein, responsive to detection of the object present exterior of the equipped vehicle, said control controls said video display device to episodically and automatically display video images of the object that are derived from image data captured by said camera. 2. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display device episodically and automatically displays the video images responsive to determination that the detected object is in a projected path of travel of the equipped vehicle. 3. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said camera is part of an exterior mirror assembly of the equipped vehicle. 4. The video display system of claim 3 , wherein said data processor comprises an image processor, and wherein said control, responsive at least in part to processing by said image processor of image data captured by said camera, detects the object present exterior of the equipped vehicle and determines if the detected object is in a blind spot of the equipped vehicle. 5. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display device is disposed in an interior rearview mirror assembly of the equipped vehicle. 6. The video display system of claim 5 , wherein the displayed video images are viewable through a reflective element of the interior rearview mirror assembly of the equipped vehicle. 7. The video display system of claim 6 , wherein said data processor comprises an image processor, and wherein said control, responsive at least in part to processing by said image processor of image data captured by said camera, detects the object present exterior of the equipped vehicle. 8. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said data processor comprises an image processor, and wherein said control, responsive at least in part to processing by said image processor of image data captured by said camera, detects the object present exterior of the equipped vehicle and determines if the detected object is in a blind spot of the equipped vehicle. 9. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display device is disposed in a windshield electronics module disposed at a windshield of the equipped vehicle. 10. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display device episodically and automatically displays the video images responsive at least in part to activation of a turn signal indicator of the equipped vehicle. 11. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display device episodically and automatically displays the video images responsive at least in part to a lane departure warning system of the equipped vehicle. 12. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display device displays video images for viewing by the driver of the vehicle responsive at least in part to actuation of a user input in the vehicle. 13. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said data processor comprises an image processor, and wherein said image processor comprises a system-on-a-chip image processor. 14. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said video display device comprises a video display screen having at least a 3.5 inch diagonal dimension. 15. The video display system of claim 1 , wherein said camera is disposed at a rear portion of the equipped vehicle and has at least a rearward field of view. 16. A video display system for a vehicle, said video display system comprising: a video display device disposed in a vehicle equipped with said video display system so as to be viewable by a driver of the equipped vehicle; wherein said video display device comprises a video display screen having at least a 3.5 inch diagonal dimension; a camera disposed at the equipped vehicle and having an exterior field of view and operable to capture image data; wherein said camera is part of an exterior mirror assembly of the equipped vehicle; wherein the field of view of said camera encompasses a blind spot of the equipped vehicle; a control comprising a data processor; wherein said control, responsive at least in part to processing by said data processor of data captured by at least one sensor of the equipped vehicle, detects an object present exterior of the equipped vehicle that is in the field of view of said camera; and wherein, responsive to detection of the object present exterior of the equipped vehicle, said control controls said video display device to episodically and automatically display video images of the object that are derived from image data captured by said camera. 17. The video display system of claim 16 , wherein said video display device displays video images for viewing by the driver of the vehicle responsive at least in part to actuation of a user input in the vehicle. 18. The video display system of claim 16 , wherein said data processor comprises an image processor and wherein said image processor comprises a system-on-a-chip image processor. 19. The video display system of claim 18 , wherein said data processor comprises an image processor, and wherein said control, responsive at least in part to processing by said image processor of image data captured by said camera, detects the object present exterior of the equipped vehicle. 20. The video display system of claim 16 , wherein said data processor comprises an image processor, and wherein said control, responsive at least in part to processing by said image processor of image data captured by said camera, detects the object present exterior of the equipped vehicle and determines if the detected object is in a blind spot of the equipped vehicle. 21. The video display system of claim 20 , wherein said video display device is disposed in an interior rearview mirror assembly of the equipped vehicle. 22. A video display system for a vehicle, said video display system comprising: a video display device disposed in a vehicle equipped with said video display system so as to be viewable by a driver of the equipped vehicle; wherein said video display device comprises a video display screen having at least a 3.5 inch diagonal dimension; a camera disposed at the equipped vehicle and having an exterior field of view and operable to capture image data; wherein said camera is disposed at a rear portion of the equipped vehicle and has at least a rearward field of view; wherein the field of view of said camera encompasses a blind spot of the equipped vehicle; a control comprising a data processor; wherein said control, responsive at least in part to processing by said data processor of data captured by at least one sensor of the equipped vehicle, detects an object present exterior of the equipped vehicle that is in the field of view of said camera; and wherein, responsive to detection of the object present ext
