Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods and compositions modulate the activity of electrically excitable cells. Photovoltaic compounds which, upon exposure to light energy, increase or decrease the electrical activity of cells. These supplement and/or replace of vision based on the conversion of light energy to electrical energy within certain cells of the visual system. A “patch” or bridge to circumvent one or more defective, damaged, or diseased cells in the visual system. Additionally, in several embodiments, subjects with normal vision can benefit from the methods, compositions, systems, and/or devices disclosed herein as normal visual acuity can be heightened. The exposure induces an energy (e.g., a receipt of light energy, conversion to electrical energy, and passage of that electrical energy) from the photovoltaic compound to the cell, thereby altering the transmembrane potential of the cell and/or the opening of one or more ion channels, thereby modulating the activity of the electrically excitable cell.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A method of modulating the activity of an electrically excitable cell comprising, placing a transition metal tris(bipyridine) complex proximate to and/or in contact with the electrically excitable cell; and exposing the transition metal tris(bipyridine) complex to light energy, wherein the exposure to light energy induces a transfer of electrical energy and/or an electron from the transition metal tris(bipyridine) complex to the cell, thereby altering one or more of the trans-membrane potentials of the cell and the opening of one or more ion channels, thereby modulating the activity of the electrically excitable cell, wherein the transition meta tris(bipyridine) complex is represented by the structure of Formula (I): where M is rhenium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium, platinum, gold, or palladium; R is an aliphatic fatty acid hydrocarbon pendant sufficient in length to anchor the transition metal tris(bipyridine) complex within the cell membrane; and n is 1, 2, or 3. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein M is ruthenium. 3. The method of claim 2 , R is an alkyl chain and n is 2. 4. The method of claim 3 , wherein R is a C 17 alkyl group. 5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the ruthenium tris(bipyridine) complex is excited at the blue end of the visible electromagnetic spectrum and luminesce in the red end of the visible electromagnetic spectrum. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electrically excitable cell is a neuroendocrine cell. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein M is rhenium. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein M is iridium. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein R is an alkyl chain. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein R is a C17 alkyl chain.
