Official abstract text for this publication.
A system and corresponding method to move build material in a three-dimensional (3D) printing system uses a gripper. The gripper is arranged to apply at least two opposing lateral forces to the build material. The at least two opposing lateral forces are applied to the build material, in conjunction with linear motion of the gripper, for at least a portion of a path the build material travels toward an extrusion head.

What is claimed is: 1. A method for moving build material in a three-dimensional (3D) printing system, the method comprising: applying at least two opposing lateral forces to a build material via a gripper, the at least two opposing lateral forces being applied to the build material for at least a portion of a path the build material travels toward an extrusion head; causing linear motion of the gripper for the at least a portion of the path the build material travels toward the extrusion head, wherein the linear motion of the gripper causes the gripper to enter a cam tube; and compressing and dilating the gripper via an internal surface of the cam tube. 2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising moving the cam tube between the extrusion head and a home position for the cam tube. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the gripper is a collet. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cam tube is coupled to a traveling component and wherein the method further comprises driving the traveling component and the gripper toward the build material. 5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the driving includes actuating an actuating component and wherein the cam tube is disposed between the actuating component and the extrusion head. 6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the travelling component defines a hollow core and wherein the method further comprises passing the build material through the hollow core and toward the extrusion head.
