A method of using select Schiff base compounds for chemical agent detoxification. The method including applying a compound to the contaminated substrate. The compound includes an imine having at least one Schiff base nitrogen and an alkyl substituent or an aryl substituent having an electron acceptor. The at least one Schiff base nitrogen is spaced away from the electron acceptor by a distance ranging from about 200 pm to about 1000 pm. The substrate and the compound are dried. The at least one Schiff base nitrogen of the compound promotes a nucleophilic attack on an electrophilic site of the toxic chemical agent.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of detoxifying a substrate contaminated with a toxic chemical agent, the method comprising: applying a composition to the contaminated substrate, the composition comprising 8-hydroxyquinoline or 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one; and drying the substrate with the composition. 2. The method of 1 , wherein the toxic chemical agent is a nerve chemical warfare agent or a blister chemical warfare agent. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein drying the substrate with the composition includes applying an electromagnetic radiation, applying irradiative heat, changing pH, or combinations thereof. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a quantity of the composition does not exceed 20 wt. %. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein applying the composition further comprises: cross-linking the composition to the substrate with a cross-linking agent that selected from the group consisting of a siloxane, an acrylate, and epoxide, and combinations thereof. 6. A method of preparing a detoxifying substrate, the method comprising: selecting a first composition based on a first expected toxic chemical agent exposure, the first composition comprising 8-hydroxyquinoline or 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one; applying a quantity of the first selected composition to the substrate; and optionally drying the substrate. 7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising: selecting a second composition based on a second expected chemical agent exposure, the second composition comprising 8-hydroxyquinoline or 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one; applying a quantity of the second selected composition to the substrate; and optionally drying the substrate. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein a combined quantity of the first composition and the second composition does not exceed 20 wt. %. 9. The method of claim 6 , wherein drying the substrate includes applying an electromagnetic radiation, applying irradiative heat, changing pH, or combinations thereof. 10. A method of pretreating a substrate to resist toxic chemical agent contamination, the method comprising: applying a composition to the substrate, the composition comprising 8-hydroxyquinoline or 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one; drying the substrate with the composition; and exposing the pretreated substrate to a toxic chemical agent. 11. The method of 10 , wherein the toxic chemical agent is a nerve chemical warfare agent or a blister chemical warfare agent. 12. The method of claim 10 , wherein drying the substrate with the composition includes applying an electromagnetic radiation, applying irradiative heat, changing pH, or combinations thereof. 13. The method of claim 10 , wherein a quantity of the composition does not exceed 20 wt. %. 14. The method of claim 10 , wherein applying the composition further comprises: cross-linking the composition to the substrate with a cross-linking agent that selected from the group consisting of a siloxane, an acrylate, and epoxide, and combinations thereof.
