Official abstract text for this publication.
A wrapper for a smoking article has a base web and a plurality of elements each having at least a pair of patch areas where diffusivity is in the range of 0 to about 0.2 cm/sec. Patches of adjacent elements are circumferentially offset from one another along the axis of a smoking article. The add-on material can be applied by gravure printing in a single pass in a chevron pattern such that an apex of the element is co-linear with substantially symmetrically spaced points on a trailing, outer edge of an adjacent element. Testing elements may be simultaneously printed with the add-on material to monitor diffusivity and/or presence of add-on material.

We claim: 1. A smoking article comprising: a rod of smokeable material, said rod comprising a column of filler and a wrapper, the rod having a circumferential direction and an axial direction that extends between a lit end and a mouth end; the wrapper having generally parallel first and second side edges extending in the axial direction and two ends extending in the circumferential direction wherein the wrapper is disposed about the column of filler such that the first and second side edges of the wrapper overlap and form a seam; the wrapper including a plurality of axially spaced patch elements, each patch element including at least two patches of add-on material which are spaced from one another in the circumferential direction by regions of the wrapper that are free of add-on material, each patch of the patch elements having an axial center equidistant from an axial extent of the patch in a mouth end axial direction and an axial extent of the patch in an opposing lit end axial direction wherein the axial centers of adjacent, circumferentially spaced patches of each patch element are offset by a predetermined axial distance, and adjacent axially spaced patch elements are spaced from one another in the axial direction by circumferential regions of the wrapper that are free of add-on material to allow free burn of the smoking article therebetween, each of the patches of the respective patch elements having a diffusivity in the range of 0.0 to about 0.2 cm/sec. 2. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the wrapper includes at least four patch elements. 3. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein each patch has a first circumferential extent in one circumferential direction, a second circumferential extent in an opposing circumferential direction, and a circumferential center equidistant between said first and second circumferential extents, wherein the circumferential centers of the patches of one patch element are circumferentially offset from the circumferential centers of the patches of an adjacent patch element. 4. The smoking article of claim 3 , wherein the circumferential offset is in the range of about 40° to about 90°, measured in the circumferential direction. 5. The smoking article of claim 4 , wherein the circumferential offset is about 45°. 6. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the patches of the patch elements are generally quadrilateral. 7. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the patches of the patch elements are generally rectangular. 8. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein each patch of the patch elements extends in the range of about 7 to about 8 mm in the circumferential direction, and extends in the range of about 6 to about 9 mm in the axial direction. 9. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the add-on material comprises starch, calcium carbonate, and an anti-wrinkling agent. 10. The smoking article of claim 9 , wherein the add-on material has been applied by printing an aqueous printing composition. 11. The smoking article of claim 9 , wherein the anti-wrinkling agent is selected from the group consisting of propylene glycol; 1,2 propylene glycol; and glycerin. 12. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the wrapper has a permeability of greater than about 20 CORESTA in regions other than said patches. 13. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the wrapper has a permeability of less than about 100 CORESTA in regions other than said patches. 14. The smoking article of claim 1 , having an IP performance of less than about 25%; and having an SE performance less than about 50%. 15. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the patches each have a diffusivity of less than about 0.1 cm/sec. 16. The smoking article of claim 4 , wherein the circumferential offset is in the range of about 40° to about 75°. 17. The smoking article of claim 1 , further comprising a filter attached to the rod at the mouth end thereof. 18. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the wrapper has a diffusivity of about 2 cm/sec or greater in regions other than said patches. 19. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein: (a) each patch element has a leading edge formed by an edge of a respective patch that is closest to the lit end of the rod and a trailing edge formed by an edge of a respective patch that is closest to the mouth end of the rod; and (b) each patch element extends between the first and second side edges of the wrapper at a predetermined angle with respect to the circumferential direction of the wrapper that is not perpendicular to the axial direction of the wrapper such that the respective at least two patches of each patch element includes a first patch having an edge that forms the leading edge of the patch element and a different, second patch having an edge that forms the trailing edge of the patch element. 20. The smoking article of claim 19 , wherein the predetermined angle is less than about 5°. 21. The smoking article of claim 19 , wherein the predetermined angle is in the range of about 0.5° to about 5°. 22. The smoking article of claim 1 , wherein the add-on material of the respective patches of the patch elements is in a condition of having been applied to base web of the wrapper via a single pass gravure roller that applies an aqueous printing composition to the base web.
