A system can include a projection layer. The projection layer can include a plurality of pixels. The plurality of pixels can be electronically controllable to vary appearance of at least one of the plurality of pixels in coordination with an image projected onto the projection layer.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1. A system, comprising: a projection layer comprising an inner layer and an external layer, wherein the external layer is between the inner layer and a projector, wherein the projector is external to the projection layer and the projection layer is in front of the projector, the external layer including a plurality of pixels that is electronically controllable to vary appearance of at least one of the plurality of pixels in coordination with an image projected onto the projection layer from the projector; wherein the inner layer is configured to display as a solid white surface and each pixel of the plurality of pixels of the external layer is individually addressable to be transparent, black, or grayscale; or wherein the inner layer is configured to display as a solid black surface and each pixel of the plurality of pixels of the external layer is individually addressable to be transparent, white, or grayscale. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the projection layer displays at least a portion of the image in synchronization and alignment with the image projected onto the projection layer by varying the appearance of the at least one of the plurality of pixels. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the projection layer comprises at least one non-transparent display. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the projection layer comprises at least one transparent display. 5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the at least one transparent display is a liquid-crystal display, a liquid crystal display comprising Smectic A liquid crystals, a light-emitting diode display, a light enhanced layer, or an organic light-emitting diode display. 6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the transparent display is non-emissive. 7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the non-emissive display includes at least one pixel of the plurality of pixels that includes dye. 8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the non-emissive display is a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal display, an electrochromic display, an electro-dispersive display, a polymer stabilized liquid crystal display, an electrowetting display, a cholesteric liquid crystal display, or a liquid crystal display comprising Smectic A liquid crystals. 9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the non-emissive display includes at least one pixel of the plurality of pixels that does not include dye and appears substantially white. 10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the projection layer includes a plurality of non-emissive and transparent displays. 11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the projection layer includes a sensor facing outward from a surface of the projection layer toward the projector, wherein the sensor is configured to detect light corresponding, at least in part, to the projected image and the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable based, at least in part, upon the light detected by the sensor. 12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the projection layer includes a camera facing outward from a surface of the projection layer toward the projector and a processor configured to recognize presence of a user in image data from the camera, and wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable based, at least in part, upon the recognized presence of the user. 13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to perform at least one of facial recognition or gaze detection, and wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable based, at least in part, upon the facial recognition or gaze detection. 14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to determine location of the user relative to the projection layer based on the image data, and wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable by the processor based, at least in part, upon the location of the user. 15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the projector includes a camera configured to capture image data of the image projected on the projection layer, wherein the projector is configured to adjust the image projected on the projection layer based upon the image data from the camera. 16. A method, comprising: providing a projection layer comprising an inner layer and an external layer between the inner layer and a projector, wherein the projector is external to the projection layer and the projection layer is in front of the projector, the external layer including a plurality of pixels that is electronically controllable to vary appearance of at least one of the plurality of pixels in coordination with an image projected onto the projection layer from the projector; wherein the inner layer is configured to display as a solid white surface and each pixel of the plurality of pixels of the external layer is individually addressable to be transparent, black, or grayscale; or wherein the inner layer is configured to display as a solid black surface and each pixel of the plurality of pixels of the external layer is individually addressable to be transparent, white, or grayscale. 17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the projection layer displays at least a portion of the image in synchronization and alignment with the image projected onto the projection layer by varying the appearance of the at least one of the plurality of pixels. 18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the projection layer comprises at least one transparent display. 19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the at least one transparent display is a liquid-crystal display, a liquid crystal display comprising Smectic A liquid crystals, a light-emitting diode display, a light enhanced layer, or an organic light-emitting diode display. 20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the transparent display is non-emissive. 21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the non-emissive display includes at least one pixel of the plurality of pixels that includes dye. 22. The method of claim 20 , wherein the non-emissive display is a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal display, an electrochromic display, an electro-dispersive display, a polymer stabilized liquid crystal display, an electrowetting display, a cholesteric liquid crystal display, or a liquid crystal display comprising Smectic A liquid crystals. 23. The method of claim 20 , wherein the non-emissive display includes at least one pixel of the plurality of pixels that does not include dye and appears substantially white. 24. The method of claim 16 , wherein the projection layer includes a plurality of non-emissive and transparent displays. 25. The method of claim 16 , wherein the projection layer includes a sensor facing outward from a surface of the projection layer toward the projector, wherein the sensor is configured to detect light corresponding, at least in part, to the projected image and the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable based, at least in part, upon the light detected by the sensor. 26. The method of claim 16 , wherein the projection layer includes a camera facing outward from a surface of the projection layer toward the projector and a processor configured to recognize presence of a user in image data from the camera, and wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable based, at least in part, upon the recognized presence of the user. 27.
