Official abstract text for this publication.
Improved techniques and systems for utilizing a portable electronic device to monitor, process, present and manage data captured by a remote sensor during a physical activity session are disclosed. The portable electronic device offers a convenient user interface that can be visual and/or audio based customized to a particular application, user-friendly and/or dynamic. The portable electronic device can pertain to a personal media device and thus also provide media playback.

What is claimed is: 1. A method comprising: receiving, by one or more processors of a mobile device, ambient activity data from one or more sensors of the mobile device; generating, by the one or more processors, an ambient activity profile from the received ambient activity data; comparing, by the one or more processors, the generated ambient activity profile with recognized ambient activity profiles; determining, by the one or more processors, that at least one recognized ambient activity profile matches the generated ambient activity profile to within a degree of match or correlation, and responsive to the match: tagging, by the one or more processors, the generated ambient activity profile as recognized; associating, by the one or more processors, a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile; and initiating or ending an activity session on the device based on the template. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating an ambient activity profile from the received ambient activity data, further comprises: categorizing the ambient activity data based upon one or more activity signatures that correspond to one or more activities. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ambient activity data includes physiologic information. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ambient activity data includes physical activity data. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the template is a workout template. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein associating a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile comprises: monitoring sensor data to determine if the device is indoors or outdoors; and selecting the template based on results of the monitoring. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein associating a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile comprises: determining a location or time of day; and selecting the template based on results of the determining. 8. The method of claim 7 , wherein associating a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile comprises: determining a change in elevation; and selecting the template based on results of the determining. 9. A system comprising: one or more sensors; one or more processors; memory storing instructions, which, when executed by the one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform operations comprising: receiving ambient activity data from the one or more sensors; generating an ambient activity profile from the received ambient activity data; comparing the generated ambient activity profile with recognized ambient activity profiles; determining that at least one recognized ambient activity profile matches the generated ambient activity profile to within a degree of match or correlation, and responsive to the match: tagging the generated ambient activity profile as recognized; and associating a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile; and initiating or ending an activity session on a device based on the template. 10. The system of claim 9 , wherein generating an ambient activity profile from the received ambient activity data, further comprises: categorizing the ambient activity data based upon one or more activity signatures that correspond to one or more activities. 11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the ambient activity data includes physiologic information. 12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the ambient activity data includes physical activity data. 13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the template is a workout template. 14. The system of claim 9 , wherein associating a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile comprises: monitoring sensor data to determine if the device is indoors or outdoors; and selecting the template based on results of the monitoring. 15. The system of claim 9 , wherein associating a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile comprises: determining a location or time of day; and selecting the template based on results of the determining. 16. The system of claim 15 , wherein associating a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile comprises: determining a change in elevation; and selecting the template based on results of the determining. 17. A non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions, which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to perform operations comprising: receiving ambient activity data from one or more sensors; generating an ambient activity profile from the received ambient activity data; comparing the generated ambient activity profile with recognized ambient activity profiles; determining that at least one recognized ambient activity profile matches the generated ambient activity profile to within a degree of match or correlation, and responsive to the match: tagging the generated ambient activity profile as recognized; associating a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile; and initiating or ending an activity session on a device based on the template. 18. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein generating an ambient activity profile from the received ambient activity data, further comprises: categorizing the ambient activity data based upon one or more activity signatures that correspond to one or more activities. 19. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein associating a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile comprises: monitoring sensor data to determine if the device is indoors or outdoors; and selecting the template based on results of the monitoring. 20. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein associating a template corresponding to a recognized activity with the tagged ambient activity profile comprises: determining a location or time of day; and selecting the template based on results of the determining.
