The invention is directed to utilization of a series of cross-linked 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymers and the use of the polymers to remove mercury from a hydrocarbon in fluid form.
Opening claim text (preview).
The invention claimed is: 1. A method for removing mercury from a fluid hydrocarbon comprising contacting the fluid hydrocarbon with a 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer for a time and under conditions sufficient for mercury to bind to the polymer, thereby removing the mercury from the fluid hydrocarbon. 2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mercury is methyl-mercury or another organomercury compound. 3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mercury is elemental mercury. 4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid hydrocarbon is a liquefied gaseous hydrocarbon. 5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid hydrocarbon is liquefied natural gas. 6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid hydrocarbon is liquefied petroleum gas containing C1-C3 hydrocarbons. 7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid hydrocarbon is gasoline or petrol. 8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid hydrocarbon is kerosene or jet fuel containing C12-C16 hydrocarbons. 9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid hydrocarbon is oil containing C15-C18 hydrocarbons. 10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid hydrocarbon is an oil containing a C19 or greater hydrocarbon. 11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid hydrocarbon is an emulsified hydrocarbon containing water. 12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid hydrocarbon is a fluidized hydrocarbon. 13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the 1,4-benzendiamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer is produced from benzene-1,4-diamine (B-D), paraformaldehyde or formaldehyde, and at least one diaminoalkane selected from the group consisting of 1,-4-diaminobutane (BD), 1,6-diaminohexane (HD), 1-8-diaminooctane (OD), 1,10-diaminodecane (DED), and 1,12-diaminododecane (DDD). 14. The method of claim 1 , comprising contacting the fluid hydrocarbon which may contain absorbed water with a 1,4-benzenediamine-co-alkyldiamine polymer that is produced from benzene-1,4-diamine (B-D), paraformaldehyde, and at least one diaminoalkane selected from the group consisting of 1,4-diaminobutane (BD), 1,6-diaminohexane (HD), and 1-8-diaminooctane (OD).
