Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Disclosed are improved methods, systems and devices for color night vision that reduce the number of intensifiers and/or decrease noise. In some embodiments, color night vision is provided in system in which multiple spectral bands are maintained, filtered separately, and then recombined in a unique three-lens-filtering setup. An illustrative four-camera night vision system is unique in that its first three cameras separately filter different bands using a subtractive Cyan, Magenta and Yellow (CMY) color filtering-process, while its fourth camera is used to sense either additional IR illuminators or a luminance channel to increase brightness. In some embodiments, the color night vision is implemented to distinguish details of an image in low light. The unique application of the three-lens subtractive CMY filtering allows for better photon scavenging and preservation of important color information.

What is claimed is: 1. An imaging apparatus, comprising: at least one separating mechanism configured to be operable to receive an image and separate at least a first frequency range of information and a second frequency range of information from the received image; a first intensifier assembly configured to be operable to intensify at least the first frequency range of information; a second intensifier assembly configured to be operable to intensify at least the second frequency range of information; and at least one outputting mechanism configured to be operable to provide the intensified at least first frequency range of information or a combined frequency range channel as an output of the imaging apparatus, wherein the combined frequency range channel comprises the intensified at least second frequency range of information. 2. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the at least one outputting mechanisms is a combining mechanism configured to be further operable to combine at least the intensified first frequency range of information and the intensified second frequency range of information to provide the combined frequency range channel as an output of the imaging apparatus. 3. The imaging apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising: a processor including instructions for: comparing two or more frequency ranges of information; and modulating amounts of color information of one or more of the two more frequency ranges of information. 4. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: at least one overlay device configured to be operable to provide at least a third frequency range of information to one or more of the at least one outputting mechanisms. 5. The imaging apparatus of claim 4 , wherein one or more of the at least one overlay devices include overlay cameras. 6. The imaging apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the third frequency range of information, provided by the one or more overlay cameras, includes ultra-violet (UV) and/or infrared (IR) frequencies. 7. The imaging apparatus of claim 5 , wherein one or more of the at least one overlay devices further include overlay displays. 8. The imaging apparatus of claim 4 , wherein one or more of the at least one overlay devices include overlay displays, and the third frequency range of information, provided by said one or more of the at least one overlay displays, includes at least one placed image overlay. 9. The imaging apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the second intensifier assembly comprises one of the at least one overlay devices. 10. The imaging apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: a third intensifier assembly configured to be operable to intensify a separated frequency range of information, wherein the separated frequency range of information includes a frequency range of information separated from the image by one of the at least one separating mechanisms. 11. An image processing method, comprising: receiving an image, at an image processing apparatus, and separating at least a first frequency range of information and a second frequency range of information from the received image; intensifying the first frequency range of information and providing the intensified first frequency range of information to at least one of one or more combining mechanisms; intensifying the second frequency range of information and providing the intensified second frequency range of information to at least one of the one or more combining mechanisms; and providing the intensified first frequency range of information or a combined frequency range channel as an output of the image processing apparatus, via at least one of the one or more combining mechanisms, wherein the combined frequency range channel comprises the intensified at least second frequency range of information. 12. The image processing method of claim 11 , further comprising: combining, via at least one of the one or more combining mechanisms, at least the intensified first frequency range of information and the intensified second frequency range of information to produce the combined frequency range channel as an output of the image processing apparatus. 13. The image processing method of claim 12 , further comprising: comparing two or more frequency ranges of information of the combined frequency range channel; and modulating amounts of color information of one or more of the two more frequency ranges of information of the combined frequency range channel. 14.
