Official abstract text for this publication.
Techniques to facilitate protecting control programs used in an industrial automation environment are disclosed herein. In at least one implementation, control system content provided by a primary entity is received along with a primary security authority provided by the primary entity, wherein the primary security authority defines primary usage rights for the control system content granted to a secondary entity. A secondary security authority provided by the secondary entity is received, wherein the secondary security authority defines secondary usage rights for the control system content that further restrict the primary usage rights. A request is received from a user associated with the secondary entity to perform an action associated with the control system content, and the request is processed with the secondary security authority to determine if the user is authorized to perform the action associated with the control system content based on the secondary usage rights.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of operating a computing system to facilitate protecting control system content, the method comprising: receiving a request from a user associated with a secondary entity to perform an action associated with the control system content; processing the request with a primary security authority defining primary usage rights for the control system content received from a primary entity to determine if the user is authorized to perform the action based on the primary usage rights; denying the request to perform the action if the primary usage rights prohibit the user from performing the action; processing the request with a secondary security authority defining secondary usage rights for the control system content received from the secondary entity to determine if the user is authorized to perform the action based on the secondary usage rights if the primary usage rights allow the user to perform the action; denying the request to perform the action if the secondary usage rights prohibit the user from performing the action; and granting the request to perform the action if the secondary usage rights allow the user to perform the action. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein granting the request comprises granting the request to perform the action if the primary and secondary usage rights allow the user to perform the action. 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the secondary security authority grants one or more permissions for the control system content prohibited to the user in the primary security authority. 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the secondary usage rights define control system content permissions for one or more user groups associated with the secondary entity. 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the primary security authority grants permissions for the control system content to one or more user groups associated with the primary entity. 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the secondary security authority restricts one or more of the permissions for the control system content granted to the one or more user groups associated with the primary entity in the primary security authority. 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the control system content comprises data associated with the operation of a configurable industrial automation device. 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the primary security authority is provided by the primary entity; and wherein the secondary security authority is provided by the second entity. 9. One or more computer-readable storage media having program instructions stored thereon to facilitate protecting control system content used in an industrial automation environment, wherein the program instructions, when executed by a computing system, direct the computing system to at least: receive a request from a user associated with a secondary entity to perform an action associated with the control system content; process the request with a primary security authority defining primary usage rights for the control system content received from a primary entity and with a secondary security authority defining secondary usage rights for the control system content received from a secondary entity to determine if the user is authorized to perform the action based on the primary and secondary usage rights; deny the request to perform the action if either of the primary usage rights or the secondary usage rights prohibits the user from performing the action; and granting the request to perform the action if both of primary usage rights and the secondary usage rights allow the user to perform the action. 10. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 9 wherein the secondary usage rights define control system content permissions for one or more user groups associated with the secondary entity. 11. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 9 wherein the primary security authority grants permissions for the control system content to one or more user groups associated with the primary entity. 12. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 11 wherein the secondary security authority restricts one or more of the permissions for the control system content granted to the one or more user groups associated with the primary entity in the primary security authority. 13. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 9 wherein the control system content comprises data associated with the operation of a configurable industrial automation device. 14. An apparatus to facilitate protecting control programs used in an industrial automation environment, the apparatus comprising: one or more computer-readable storage media; and program instructions stored on the one or more computer-readable storage media that, when executed by a processing system, direct the processing system to at least: receive a request from a user associated with a secondary entity to perform an action associated with the control system content; process the request with a primary security authority defining primary usage rights for the control system content received from a primary entity to determine if the user is authorized to perform the action based on the primary usage rights; deny the request to perform the action if the primary usage rights prohibit the user from performing the action; process the request with a secondary security authority defining secondary usage rights for the control system content received from the secondary entity to determine if the user is authorized to perform the action based on the secondary usage rights if the primary usage rights allow the user to perform the action; deny the request to perform the action if the secondary usage rights prohibit the user from performing the action; and grant the request to perform the action if the secondary usage rights allow the user to perform the action. 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the program instructions that direct the processing system to grant the request direct the processing system to grant the request to perform the action if the primary and secondary usage rights allow the user to perform the action. 16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the secondary security authority grants one or more permissions for the control system content prohibited to the user in the primary security authority. 17. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the secondary usage rights define control system content permissions for one or more user groups associated with the secondary entity. 18. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the primary security authority grants permissions for the control system content to one or more user groups associated with the primary entity. 19. The apparatus of claim 18 wherein the secondary security authority restricts one or more of the permissions for the control system content granted to the one or more user groups associated with the primary entity in the primary security authority. 20. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the control system content comprises data associated with the operation of a configurable industrial automation device.
