An air filter element ( 200 ) for insertion into an air filter housing, comprising an intake surface ( 275 ), a discharge surface ( 285 ), a filter medium ( 210 ), and a filter element-retaining device ( 240 ) which extends along at least a section of the periphery of the filter medium ( 210 ), between the intake surface ( 275 ) and the discharge surface ( 285 ), and which includes a retaining arrangement ( 270 ) that radially projects from the filter medium ( 210 ).

What is claimed is: 1. An air filter element for insertion into an air filter housing ( 100 ), wherein the air filter element ( 200 ) has: an intake surface ( 275 ), a discharge surface ( 285 ), a filter medium ( 210 ), a filter element retaining device ( 240 ), wherein the filter medium ( 210 ) extends between the intake surface and the discharge surface in an axial direction of the air filter element ( 200 ), wherein the filter element retaining device is connected to the filter medium ( 210 ), wherein the filter element retaining device ( 240 ) has a retaining arrangement ( 270 ) projecting radially from the filter medium ( 210 ) and a seal arrangement ( 260 ) with a circumferential seal line ( 261 ), wherein the filter medium ( 210 ) has a least one edge ( 213 ) extending between the intake surface ( 275 ) and the discharge surface ( 285 ) on which adjacent ones of a plurality of filter medium side surfaces ( 211 , 212 ) adjoin each other, wherein the filter element retaining arrangement ( 270 ) has a radial bulge ( 243 ) arranged on and extending radially outwards from a respective one of the plurality of filter medium side surfaces ( 211 , 212 ), a frame or plate of a plastic material formed onto and coating respective ones of the plurality of filter medium side surfaces such the filter medium at the respective side surface is plastic coated, wherein the frame or plate of plastic material is injection molded directly onto the filter medium, securing and sealing the filter medium to the frame, wherein the seal arrangement ( 260 ) includes a sealing mass ( 263 ) of an elastic sealing material forming the seal line ( 261 ), the sealing mass ( 263 ) arranged on the retaining device ( 240 ), wherein the seal line ( 261 ) runs around a radial outer periphery of the filter medium ( 210 ), the seal line ( 261 ) running along the radial bulge, wherein the seal line is arranged on an upper axial side of the retaining arrangement; wherein another sealing mass ( 263 ) of an elastic sealing material is arranged on a lower axial side of the retaining device forming a second seal line, the second seal line is arranged on a lower axial side of the retaining device. 2. The air filter element according to claim 1 , wherein the seal line ( 261 ) runs so as to curve radially away from the filter medium ( 210 ) along a section in the region of the radial bulge ( 243 ). 3. An air filter element for insertion into an air filter housing ( 100 ), wherein the air filter element ( 200 ) has: an intake surface ( 275 ), a discharge surface ( 285 ), a filter medium ( 210 ), a filter element retaining device ( 240 ), wherein the filter medium ( 210 ) extends between the intake surface and the discharge surface in an axial direction of the air filter element ( 200 ), wherein the filter element retaining device is connected to the filter medium ( 210 ), wherein the filter element retaining device ( 240 ) has a retaining arrangement ( 270 ) projecting radially from the filter medium ( 210 ) and a seal arrangement ( 260 ) with a circumferential seal line ( 261 ), wherein the filter medium ( 210 ) has a least one edge ( 213 ) extending between the intake surface ( 275 ) and the discharge surface ( 285 ) on which adjacent ones of a plurality of filter medium side surfaces ( 211 , 212 ) adjoin each other, wherein the filter element retaining arrangement ( 270 ) has a radial bulge ( 243 ) arranged on and extending radially outwards from a respective one of the plurality of filter medium side surfaces ( 211 , 212 ), a frame or plate of a plastic material formed onto and coating respective ones of the plurality of filter medium side surfaces such the filter medium at the respective side surface is plastic coated, wherein the frame or plate of plastic material is injection molded directly onto the filter medium, securing and sealing the filter medium to the frame, wherein the seal arrangement ( 260 ) includes a sealing mass ( 263 ) of an elastic sealing material forming the seal line ( 261 ), the sealing mass ( 263 ) arranged on the retaining device ( 240 ), wherein the seal line ( 261 ) runs around a radial outer periphery of the filter medium ( 210 ), the seal line ( 261 ) running along the radial bulge, wherein the seal line ( 261 ) runs so as to curve radially away from the filter medium ( 210 ) along a section in the region of the radial bulge ( 243 ), wherein the seal line is arranged on at least one axial side of the retaining arrangement and configured to form an axially acting seal between the filter element and an air filter housing into which the filter element may be installed. 4. The air filter element according to claim 3 , wherein the seal line ( 261 ) runs so as to curve radially away from the filter medium ( 210 ) along several sections, wherein a section is associated with each curved-away section in which the seal line ( 261 ) runs so as to curve radially toward the filter medium ( 210 ), the mutually associated sections following each other immediately, in the circumferential direction of the air filter element ( 200 ). 5. The air filter element as set forth in claim 3 , wherein the seal line ( 261 ) runs so as to curve radially away from the filter medium ( 210 ) in one or more sections with an at least nearly constant radius of curvature and/or the seal line ( 261 ) runs so as to curve radially toward the filter medium ( 210 ) in one or more sections with an at least nearly constant radius of curvature. 6. The air filter element according to claim 3 , wherein the retaining arrangement ( 270 ) is arranged radially between the seal line ( 261 ) and the filter medium ( 210 ). 7. The air filter element according to claim 3 , wherein the sealing mass of the elastic sealing material is: coated, cast, foamed or molded onto the filter element, forming the seal line ( 261 ). 8. The air filter element according to claim 3 , wherein the frame or plate is a circumferential frame extending circumferentially completely around a radial outer periphery of the filter medium on the plurality of filter medium side surfaces. 9. The air filter element according to claim 3 , wherein the retaining arrangement ( 270 ) has a retaining surface ( 271 ) that is configured to transfer retaining forces between the air filter element ( 200 ) and an air filter housing ( 100 ). 10. The air filter element according to claim 3 , wherein the retaining arrangement ( 270 ) extends in the axial direction (A) on at least one of the plurality of filter medium side surfaces over at least a part of the filter medium, the part extending in the axial direction being formed as an elongated spacer bar, spacing the filter element from an air filter housing. 11. The air filter element according to claim 3 , wherein the retaining arrangement ( 270 ) has at least one recess ( 272 ) in the axial direction (A), wherein the recess ( 272 ) is designed to receive an air filter housing-side projection ( 172 ), the recess ( 272 ) tapering conically in the axial direction (A), at least in part, and/or at least one of the recesses ( 272 ) being a slotted hole recess. 12. The air filter element according to claim 3 , wherein the radial bulge ( 243 ) is connected to or formed integrally with the frame or plate of plastic material. 13. An air filter with an air filter element and an filter housing, comprising: the air filter element ( 200 ) comprising: an intake surface ( 275 ), a discharge surface ( 285 ), a filter medium ( 210 ), a filter element retaining device ( 240 ), wherein the filter medium ( 210 ) extends between the intake surface and the disch
