What is claimed is: 1. A battery pack for an electric vehicle, the battery pack comprising: an upper tray; a first busbar attached to the upper tray; a lower tray; a second busbar attached to the lower tray; a plurality of battery cells arranged in the upper and lower trays; and a ballistic armor layer connected with the lower tray, wherein the plurality of battery cells contact the lower tray on a first side of the lower tray and the ballistic armor layer contacts the lower tray on a second side of the lower tray, wherein the second side of the lower tray is opposite the first side of the lower tray, wherein the lower tray contacts the plurality of battery cells and the ballistic armor layer, wherein the second busbar contacts the ballistic armor layer and the lower tray, and wherein the ballistic armor layer is connected to the electric vehicle. 2. The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein the ballistic armor layer comprises a single substantially homogeneous layer. 3. The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein ballistic the armor layer comprises a plurality of layers, each comprising multiple materials. 4. The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein the ballistic armor layer is configured to protect the battery cells. 5. The battery pack of claim 1 , wherein the lower tray is connected to the electric vehicle. 6. A method of forming a battery pack for an electric vehicle, the method comprising: providing an upper tray; attaching a first busbar to the upper tray; providing a lower tray; attaching a second busbar to the lower tray; arranging a plurality of battery cells in the upper and lower trays; connecting a ballistic armor layer to the lower tray; and connecting the ballistic armor layer to the electric vehicle, wherein the plurality of battery cells contact the lower tray on a first side of the lower tray and the ballistic armor layer contacts the lower tray on a second side of the lower tray, wherein the second side of the lower tray is opposite the first side of the lower tray, wherein the lower tray contacts the plurality of battery cells and the ballistic armor layer, and wherein the second busbar contacts the ballistic armor layer and the lower tray. 7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the ballistic armor layer comprises a single substantially homogeneous layer. 8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the ballistic armor layer comprises a plurality of layers, each comprising multiple materials. 9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising placing the ballistic armor layer in the electric vehicle. 10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the ballistic armor layer is connected to the lower tray prior to the ballistic armor layer being placed in the electric vehicle. 11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the ballistic armor layer is connected to the lower tray after the ballistic armor layer is placed in the electric vehicle. 12. A method of installing a battery pack in an electric vehicle, the method comprising: providing a ballistic armor layer; providing a rechargeable battery system, the rechargeable battery system comprising: an upper tray; a lower tray; and a plurality of battery cells arranged in the upper and lower trays, wherein the plurality of battery cells contact the lower tray on a first side of the lower tray; attaching the rechargeable battery system to the ballistic armor layer; and connecting the ballistic armor layer to the electric vehicle, wherein the ballistic armor layer contacts the lower tray on a second side of the lower tray, wherein the second side of the lower tray is opposite the first side of the lower tray, wherein the lower tray contacts the plurality of battery cells and the ballistic armor layer, and wherein the second busbar contacts the ballistic armor layer and the lower tray. 13. The method of claim 12 , wherein attaching the rechargeable battery system to the electric vehicle comprises attaching the rechargeable battery system to the ballistic armor layer. 14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the ballistic armor layer comprises a single substantially homogeneous layer. 15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the ballistic armor layer comprises a plurality of layers, each comprising multiple materials. 16. The method of claim 12 , wherein connecting the ballistic armor layer to the electric vehicle comprises attaching the rechargeable battery system to the electric vehicle.
