Methods and apparatus for checking emitter bonds in an irrigation drip line and for manufacturing drip line in a manner that allows the bond between the in-line emitter and surrounding conduit to be checked. In one form, a downstream in-line vacuum tester is provided for monitoring the amount of air escaping from outlet openings in the drip line to detect excessive air associated with poorly bonded emitters.

What is claimed is: 1. A production line with emitter bond tester for testing the bond between an emitter and a surrounding conduit to which the emitter is bonded to form drip line, the tester comprising: a housing defining a vacuum chamber capable of storing fluid within the chamber, the housing defining a first inlet opening that forms a first seal between the tester and conduit passing through the tester and a second outlet opening that forms a second seal between the tester and conduit passing through the tester; wherein the tester further includes at least one of a display, meter or camera for monitoring air escaping from outlet passages in the conduit into the vacuum chamber; wherein the housing is positioned downstream of a conduit extruder, a conduit cooling tank and an outlet passage cutter for making the outlet passages in the conduit. 2. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 1 wherein the at least one display, meter or camera comprises a camera disposed in a first portion of the housing for providing a first position for monitoring air escaping from outlet passages in the conduit and a window disposed in a second portion of the housing, different than the first portion, for providing a second position for monitoring air escaping from outlet passages of the conduit, the second position being different than the first position. 3. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 1 wherein the at least one display, meter or camera comprises a camera connected to the housing in a first portion of the housing and positioned to capture images of the air escaping from the outlet passages of the conduit and a window disposed in a second portion of the housing different than the first portion such that the window and camera are spaced apart from one another to provide for further visual inspection beyond that provided by the camera. 4. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 1 wherein the at least one display, meter or camera comprises a flow meter positioned to detect air escaping from the outlet passages of the conduit. 5. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 1 further comprising a controller coupled the emitter bond tester to monitor at least one of the flow meter or the camera and to stop production of the conduit. 6. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 2 further comprising at least one of a downstream reel and a controller, wherein the controller executes a command instructing the downstream reel to stop. 7. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 1 wherein the tester further includes first and second drip compartments positioned proximate the first and second seals to catch fluid leaking from the tester. 8. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 7 wherein the first and second drip compartments include drains for draining the leaked fluid from the drip compartments. 9. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 1 further comprising a vacuum pump for lowering pressure within the vacuum chamber. 10. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 9 further comprising a base or stand to which the housing and vacuum pump are connected. 11. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 10 wherein the housing is connected atop the base or stand and at least a portion of the vacuum pump is disposed within the base or stand, the base or stand further having a plurality of wheels for allowing the tester to be moved. 12. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 4 wherein the flow meter has a tapered guide for directing the amount of air escaping from outlet passages in the conduit to the flow meter in order to measure the amount of escaping air. 13. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 12 wherein fluid stored within the housing is at a first level outside of the tapered guide and at a second level inside the tapered guide, with the second level being different from the first level in order to create a pressure differential to urge escaped air from outlet passages of the conduit to flow to the tapered guide and the flow meter. 14. A production line with emitter bond tester for testing the bond between an emitter and a surrounding conduit to which the emitter is bonded to form drip line, the tester comprising: a housing defining a vacuum tank capable of storing fluid within the tank, a first inlet opening that forms a first seal between the tester and conduit passing through the tester and a second outlet opening that forms a second seal between the tester and conduit passing through the tester; a flow meter connected to the housing and having a guide positioned at least in part within fluid within the tank and proximate the conduit to capture air escaping from openings formed in the conduit to assist the flow meter in measuring the escaping air; a controller in communication with the flow meter to monitor the flow meter; wherein the flow meter detects a leak rate of air escaping from the openings formed in the conduit; and wherein the emitter bond tester is positioned downstream of a cutter for making the openings formed in the conduit. 15. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 1 wherein the emitter bond tester is a standalone component. 16. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 14 wherein fluid stored within the housing is at a first level outside of the guide and at a second level inside the guide, with the second level being different from the first level in order to create a pressure differential to urge escaped air from outlet passages of the conduit to flow to the tapered guide and the flow meter. 17. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 16 wherein the first fluid level outside of the guide is higher than the second fluid level fluid level inside the guide to create the pressure differential. 18. The production line with emitter bond tester of claim 14 wherein the emitter bond tester is a standalone component. 19. A production line with emitter bond tester comprising: an emitter insertion tool; an extruder into which the emitter insertion tool may be at least partially disposed to connect individual emitters to tubing extruded by the extruder; a vacuum sizing tank containing fluid and positioned downstream of the extruder to receive the extruded tubing and assist in maintaining a desired form of the extruded tubing; a cutter positioned downstream of the vacuum sizing tank to make holes in the extruded tubing, each hole being associated with one of the emitters; and an emitter bond tester positioned downstream of the cutter and comprising a second separate fluid filled vacuum tank and having: a housing defining a vacuum tank capable of storing fluid within the tank, a first inlet opening that forms a first seal between the tester and the extruded tubing passing through the tester and a second outlet opening that forms a second seal between the tester and extruded tubing passing through the tester; a flow meter connected to the housing and having a guide positioned at least in part within the fluid of the tank to capture air escaping from openings in the extruded tubing to assist the flow meter in collecting the escaped air; a controller in communication with the flow meter to monitor the flow meter; and wherein the flow meter detects a flow rate of air escaping from openings in the extruded tubing.
