Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A cartridge for selectively dispensing an additive to water that includes a housing, a bladder disposed within the housing, and a pump connected to the housing and in fluid communication with the bladder. The bladder is configured to contain a consumable additive such as a flavor, for water. The pump is operable to selectively dispense an amount of the additive into water. The cartridge may be connected to a water filtration system such that the cartridge may dispense the additive into filtered water.

What is claimed is: 1. A cartridge for selectively dispensing an additive to water, comprising: a housing having a longitudinal axis, the housing being substantially rigid; a ventless bladder disposed within said housing and configured to contain a consumable additive; and a pump connected to said housing and in fluid communication with said bladder, said pump comprising an outlet check valve extending from said pump and being operable to selectively dispense an amount of additive to water; wherein said cartridge is configured such that it may dispense said amount of additive from any orientation when a force is applied to the housing or pump in a direction along the longitudinal axis of the housing and toward the outlet check valve. 2. The cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein said pump comprises a diaphragm pump. 3. The cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein said pump comprises an inlet check valve in fluid communication with said bladder; a diaphragm positioned over said inlet check valve defining a chamber between said inlet check valve and said diaphragm; and said outlet check valve disposed on said diaphragm and in fluid communication with said chamber; wherein said outlet check valve is configured to open when pressure is applied to said diaphragm to dispense said amount of additive contained within said chamber. 4. The cartridge according to claim 3 , wherein said pump further comprises a pump body connected to one end of said housing, said pump body having an opening therethrough; wherein said bladder is sealed to said pump body and in fluid communication with said opening; wherein said inlet check valve is disposed within said opening; and wherein said diaphragm is connected to said pump body and positioned over said inlet check valve. 5. The cartridge according to claim 3 , wherein said housing and said pump are substantially axially aligned with one another. 6. The cartridge according to claim 3 , wherein said inlet check valve is operable as a self-sealing septum over a pump opening disposed within said pump and is an umbrella valve. 7. The cartridge according to claim 3 , wherein said inlet check valve, outlet check valve, and diaphragm comprise a flexible material. 8. The cartridge according to claim 7 , wherein said flexible material comprises one or more elastomers selected from the group consisting of: silicone, thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), buna, neoprene, EPDM, and combinations thereof. 9. The cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein said outlet check valve extends from said pump such that sealing surfaces of said outlet check valve are positioned on a distal end of said outlet check valve. 10. The cartridge according to claim 1 , wherein said bladder comprises a flexible, vapor barrier. 11. The cartridge according to claim 10 , wherein said bladder is a gusseted foil pouch. 12. The cartridge according to claim 1 , further comprising a measuring device operable to measure a remaining amount of additive in said bladder. 13. A cartridge for selectively dispensing an additive to water, comprising: a housing having a longitudinal axis, the housing being substantially rigid; a bladder disposed within said housing and configured to contain an additive; and a pump connected to said housing and in fluid communication with said bladder, wherein said pump comprises an outlet check valve extending from said pump, said outlet check valve having sealing surfaces, and is operable to selectively dispense an amount of additive to water from said bladder; wherein said cartridge is configured to include substantially no dead space downstream of said sealing surfaces and configured such that it may dispense said amount of additive when a force is applied to the housing or pump in a direction along the longitudinal axis of the housing and toward said outlet check valve. 14. The cartridge according to claim 13 , wherein said pump comprises an inlet check valve in fluid communication with said bladder; and a diaphragm positioned over said inlet check valve defining a chamber between said inlet check valve and said diaphragm, wherein said chamber is configured to hold said amount of additive; wherein said outlet check valve is disposed on said diaphragm and in fluid communication with said chamber and is configured to open upon operation of said diaphragm to dispense said amount of additive. 15. The cartridge according to claim 14 , wherein said amount is a prequantified amount from about 0.05 ml to about 1.0 ml.
