Composite fasteners have a high fraction of discontinuous, randomly oriented reinforcing fibers. A charge of thermoplastic fiber flakes are heated to melting temperature within a reservoir, flowed into multiple mold cavities and compression molded. The molded fasteners have high strength, exhibit quasi-isotropic properties and may be produced in high volume.

What is claimed is: 1. Apparatus for producing a plurality of composite fasteners, comprising: a mold having a plurality of mold cavities respectively defining fasteners and a wall separating a reservoir from the mold cavities; the reservoir for containing thermoplastic infused fiber flakes, the reservoir having a substantially open top, wherein the reservoir is coupled with the plurality of mold cavities, wherein the reservoir is integrally formed within the mold, and wherein the reservoir is adapted to be heated to melt the thermoplastic infused fiber flakes; and a flow region formed in the space between the wall and the plurality of mold cavities and through which melted fiber flakes are distributed to the plurality of mold cavities, wherein the wall includes an opening therein through which the melted fiber flakes flow from the reservoir into the flow region. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the opening is a flow control opening centrally located in the wall for controlling the flow of melted, infused fiber flakes from the reservoir into the plurality of mold cavities. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising heater elements within the mold for heating the mold and the reservoir. 4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the reservoir has a substantially open top, and the apparatus further comprises a male die adapted to be displaced into the reservoir and force melted fiber flakes to flow from the reservoir into the plurality of mold cavities. 5. The apparatus of claim 4 further comprising: a charge of the thermoplastic infused fiber flakes introduced into the mold. 6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the charge has at least approximately sixty percent fiber content or higher. 7. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the thermoplastic infused fiber flakes include a thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of: PEI (polyetherimide) PPS (polyphenylene sulphide), PES (polyethersulfone), PEEK (polyetheretherketone), PEKK (polyetheretherketone), and PEKK-FC (polyetherketoneketone-fc grade). 8. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the charge has a volume, when melted, that substantially corresponds to a volume of the plurality of mold cavities and a volume of the flow region. 9. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising: a plurality of fasteners within the plurality of mold cavities, each fastener of the plurality of fasteners formed from a fiber-reinforced thermoplastic material. 10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fiber-reinforced thermoplastic material includes a thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of: PEI (polyetherimide) PPS (polyphenylene sulphide), PES (polyethersulfone), PEEK (polyetheretherketone), PEKK (polyetheretherketone), and PEKK-FC (polyetherketoneketone-fc grade). 11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the fiber-reinforced thermoplastic material comprises at least approximately sixty percent fiber content or higher. 12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the flow region is above and directly open to each of the plurality of mold cavities. 13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the reservoir is above the flow region.
