Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present disclosure is directed to a method for cutting a coreless rolled paper product. The method includes defining a core offset value for a cut, the cut having a starting point and an ending point, setting a plunge speed for a saw to a first plunge speed, and changing the plunge speed to a second plunge speed when the saw reaches the core offset value.

What is claimed is: 1. A system for cutting a coreless rolled paper product, the system comprising: a master roll of coreless paper product to be cut into end product rolls; an indexer for moving the master roll between cut locations; a saw comprising a saw blade that articulates between a raised position and a lowered position thereby defining the saw's plunge and the rate of articulation defining the plunge speed; an output to communicate with the saw; and a controller communicatively coupled to the saw, the controller comprising at least one microprocessor and programmed to: identify or determine a core offset value for a cut, the cut having a starting point and an ending point; identify or determine a throughput rate of the saw; identify or determine a first saw plunge speed or a first blade speed; identify or determine a second saw plunge speed or a second blade speed; and at least one user input device communicatively coupled to the controller for uploading one or more of the core offset value, the cut starting point, the cut ending point, the throughput rate of the saw, the first plunge speed, the second plunge speed, or other variables identified to the controller to calculate one or more of the core offset value, the cut starting point, the cut ending point, the throughput rate of the saw, the first plunge speed, or the second plunge speed; wherein the controller is programmed to index the coreless master roll to a first cut position, begin articulating the saw at a first plunge speed and at a first blade speed, and to change either the first plunge speed or the first blade speed to a second plunge speed or a second blade speed at the core offset value. 2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the core offset value is a distance from the starting point of the cut, wherein the distance is measured along a line between the starting point and the ending point. 3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further programmed to: send a startup signal through the output to operate the saw at the first saw plunge speed; determine when the core offset value has been reached; and send a control signal through the output indicating that the core offset value has been reached. 4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further programmed to: determine a deceleration rate; and determine a deceleration point based on the core offset value and the first saw plunge speed; send a control signal indicative of at least one of the deceleration rate and the deceleration point to the saw through the output. 5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the controller is further programmed to: determine when the deceleration point has been reached by the saw, wherein the control signal is sent based on when the deceleration point has been reached. 6. The system of claim 4 , wherein the controller programmed to setting a saw plunge speed at a first plunge speed further includes: identifying a desired maximum second saw plunge speed, desired maximum second saw plunge speed, and a throughput rate; calculating the first saw plunge speed and the second saw plunge speed based on the throughput rate and the core offset value, wherein the first saw plunge speed does not exceed the desired maximum first saw plunge speed and the second saw plunge speed does not exceed the desired maximum second saw plunge speed value. 7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the second saw plunge speed is set to its desired maximum and the first saw plunge speed is calculated based upon throughput rate.
