Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A lift system comprises a drum that rotates about an axis, an elongate member that winds around the drum when the drum rotates in a first direction and that unwinds from the drum when the drum rotates in a second direction, a drive mechanism operable to rotate the drum, and a braking mechanism adapted to inhibit rotation of the drum. The braking mechanism includes a brake disk rotatable with the drum, a movable brake pad, and a ramp that guides movement of the movable brake pad. A method of operating the lift system comprises rotating the drum in a first direction to wind the elongate member onto the drum, rotating the drum in a second direction to unwind the elongate member from the drum, and moving the brake shoe along the ramp to thereby cause the movable brake pad to be compressed against the brake disk.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A lift system configured to lift an article, the lift system comprising: a drum that rotates about an axis; an elongate member that winds around the drum when the drum rotates about the axis in a first direction to raise the article and that unwinds from the drum when the drum rotates about the axis in a second direction to lower the article; a drive mechanism operable to rotate the drum about the axis; and a braking mechanism adapted to inhibit rotation of the drum, the braking mechanism including: a brake disk rotatable with the drum; a movable brake pad; and a ramp that guides movement of the movable brake pad relative to the brake disk. 2. A lift system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the braking mechanism further includes a fixed brake pad positioned adjacent the brake disk in opposing relation to the movable brake pad. 3. A lift system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the braking mechanism further includes a brake shoe attached to the movable brake pad, wherein movement of the brake shoe and movable brake pad is guided by the ramp. 4. A lift system as claimed in claim 1 , wherein rotation of the drum in the first direction causes the movable brake pad to move away from the brake disk and rotation of the drum in the second direction causes the movable brake pad to move toward the brake disk. 5. A lift system as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a brake release mechanism adapted to move the movable brake pad away from the brake disk. 6. A lift system as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the brake release mechanism includes a pivotable brake release arm that is capable of moving the movable brake pad away from the brake disk. 7. A lift system as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the drive mechanism includes a motor mounted for tilting, and wherein the brake release mechanism is actuated by tilting of the motor. 8. A method of operating a lift system configured to lift an article, the lift system including a drum, an elongate member wound around the drum, and a braking mechanism having a brake disk rotatable with the drum, a movable brake pad, a brake shoe attached to the movable brake pad, and a ramp that guides movement of the movable brake pad, the method comprising: rotating the drum in a first direction to wind the elongate member onto the drum and lift the article; rotating the drum in a second direction to unwind the elongate member from the drum and lower the article; and moving the brake shoe along the ramp to thereby cause the movable brake pad to be compressed against the brake disk to thereby substantially inhibit rotation of the drum. 9. A method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the braking mechanism further includes a fixed brake pad positioned adjacent the brake disk in opposing relation to the movable brake pad, and wherein moving the brake shoe causes the movable brake pad to move toward the fixed brake pad. 10. A method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein rotating the drum in the first direction causes the movable brake pad to move away from the brake disk. 11. A method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein rotating the drum in the second direction includes moving the movable brake pad away from the brake disk. 12. A method as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the drive mechanism includes a motor, and wherein moving the movable brake pad includes tilting the motor.
